Windows 2000 and file/printer sharing

Whenever I connect to the shared folders/printer on my server running Windows 2000, I get prompted for a username and password. So whenever I need to print something, I need to reconnect to the printer and input the username and password. This is very inconvenient. Is there any way to make anyone able to access the folders/printer without entering a username and password?

Im assuming its because you do not have the same exact username and password on the PC and the server?

You can have the ID of 'John' on the desktop pc and youd need to have the same exact username (and password if there is a password) on the server too.

On the other hand, if your using XP, you can go into Control Panel, User Accounts, your account and choose "manage network passwords" and type in the server name and the account and password you use to connect to it.
Anytime you connect to that server, it will use that ID and PW

I think that entails enabling the guest account, you really dont want to do that unless you have too though

A printer is a securable object, just like files and registry keys, and has a set of permissions associated with it.

The first (and best) solution would be to create a domain and join your client machine to the domain.

The other options are already mentioned: create a user account on the print server with the same username/password as the account that you use on the client machine, or enable the guest account and give Guests permissions to print to this printer.

creating a domain is NOT the best option, imho. not for this small problem.

You should create a user with the exact same username/password on the server, and then the client should pass these credentials through to the server. Login with the userID to the server one time to ensure everything is working.
