Yes, I use windows 2000... I like it better. However, im not sure if my newly ordered x2 3800+ is going to work in it? Anyone know? Thanks.

Thats what ive heard for any os. That would suck but, definitely would do it for an x2. Thanks for the heads up. :p

I have 4 X2's all in win2k. No problem. If you do a scratch install, then all is good, otherwise, you have to force the multi-processor PC driver.

Edit, but with games, you may have to set affinity, no X2 driver. I did for WC3.

I see. Thanks. I was hoping an experienced person with x2's in win2k might reply. :p

I dont know what affinity is or how to set it but im sure ill figure it out when I get my x2. :p Im hoping what everyone says is true that games run smoother. Ill have to test out my mpeg2 encoding as well in cce. Cant wait to see that one. :) Thanks.

I use Win2K with an X2 4400+.

So far, everything I've thrown at it has worked flawlessly, from encoding video to playing games, which was a pleasant surprise.
Every game I play has worked fine without any need to set affinity (I don't play WC3 though).

As posted above, you will have to set the Multiprocessor Hal up manually unless you do a fresh install, but its easy enough.
You should be just fine.

Every Win2K user, contact AMD tech support and force them to release X2 driver for Win2k quickly!

Why would you want a Company to support a piece of software that the developer itself no longer supports cept on a corprate lvl.

Given the similatity of 2K and XP, I doubt whether it would take too much effort to roll out an X2 Win2K driver.
It seems laziness on AMD's part to me, and isn't good PR to exclude that part of the community, especially as 2K is as capable with dual core as XP.

I have believed that Cool'n'Quiet does not work with X2 3800+ in Windows 2000. This was wrong. I accidentally noticed that CPU clock was 1180MHz at idle and 2360MHz at load when running CPU-Z. I usually use my system as a Power User, so I didn't notice it. Cool'n'Quiet software for Windows 2000 is listed only in the Sinlge Core Processor Utility page, but Win2K Cool'n'Quiet Software for single-core CPU also works for dual-core CPU.

Thats still not the same as the X2 driver, the cool and quiet driver is a seperate thing.

Hah! I didn't say that "that" = "X2 driver". Perhaps you mean that processor driver includes c'n'q driver and more. My subject is c'n'q.

I upgraded a PII W2K installation to AMD X2 -- this needed an OS repair to run, but was fine afterwards. Both cores were recognized, and ran without any problems.

I run folding@home almost all the time, so don't get much out of cool & quiet, but I did install some drivers, and see the AMD Power Now! services running.

I also did a processor swap on XP, single to dual core. It recognized a hardware change, said that it was installing the multi-processor core, and required a re-boot before the second core was functional.

Pretty painless for the most part. (The greatest pain I had was with a new MB, which was supposed to be dual-core compatible but wasn't with that BIOS (wouldn't even POST), and I didn't have any compatible single-core CPU's, so couldn't update the BIOS...)
