Was wondering what are the main difference between pro and advance server. I currenly have pro installed on my epox 8kta3 and i just got win2k advance.

Main thing i was wondering can all things that say they run in 2000 run in advance server like Unreal tournament for examle.

on this web sight
http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/guide/server/solutions/overview/advanced.asp

It mentions the way advance run interanlly which sounds like it would be a better os but was curious if anyone had had any problems.

It would be very helpfull if people mentioned maybe some of there experiences.

Thanks
Jason

Unless you plan to be a server, stay away from advanced server. I've found that drivers that work for win2k pro won't work on win2k server. Server adds a lot of services that you wouldn't need. You can remove them, but then you'd have win2k professional.

It comes with the array of network services like DHCP, WINS, etc.

They only thing you may find useful is Terminal Services, and that's stretching it.

If you're going to run advance server, it is meant to be configured how you want it and left alone. If you want to use it for games, stick with professional. "Server" versions are usually meant to NOT be tampered with but are good for their stability.

tjll11a, you're almost certainly NOT going to want Advanced Server for what you're going to be doing. At most, you might want to use Win2K Server for that FTP/Web/gaming server. You only want Advanced Server if your server box has more than 4 processors, has more than 4GB of memory, or is in a cluster with other servers. If all of these things are not true, you want the plain Win2K Server.

Actually, Win2K Pro can function just fine as a FTP/Web/gaming server if you'll be having no more than 10 computers connected to it at the same time. Allowing more than 10 connections would technically be in violation of your Win2K Pro license, but that's up to you.
