Help, this is very frustrating. Heres my situation, 1 computer running Windows 2000 AS that has two nic. One going to the internet via the cable modem and one going to a hub. the next pc hac one nic going to the hub. I got the nic going to the cable modem tcp/ip set set obtain IP automatically along with the dns. Also got the Internet sharing box checked on this card, the one going to the cable modem. The other nic's ip address is set to 192.168.0.1 subnet mask 255.255.255.0 nothing in the gateway, the dns is set to 127.0.0.1 On the other computer, that nic is set to ip 192.168.0.2 subnet mask is 255.255.255.0 the gateway I'm not sure about, I believe I tried 192.168.0.1 and also tried the ip address that was assigned by the isp on the nic card thats connected to the modem. don't know if there is supposed to be something in the dns field. I can ping both computers for each other. Everything seems to be working except the dang internet on the second computer. what am I missing? This can get very frustrating very easily. Also I can see each pc in the network, I was able to transfer files between the 2.

Help me...
Thanks,
KK

You've got to install Internet Connection Sharing (ICS). Very easy to do.

Right Click the Local area network icon for your second nic (the one for you lan) and go to properties and click connection sharing and set your other computer to DHCP and your all set.

When I do that internet sharing thing for the local lan nic it changes my nic card that is attached to the modem ip address from obtain one automatically to 192.168.0.1 This I believe won't work as I lose communications with the internet. If I set the nic attached to the modem the share setting then that sets my lan nic ip address to 192.168.0.1 Isn't this what I want to do? any other ideas or suggestions?

You had it right the first time. Set second machine's gateway to the first machine (192.168.0.1), and set DNS on both to the ISP's DNS servers' addresses.

Yeah sorry check the nic for your cable modem and it will put a static IP on your other nic.

I tried setting the gateway on the second computer to 192.168.0.1 and I put the dns of the isp on the 2 lan cards. this did not seem to help. Windows 2000 does not have the winipcfg program. Is there another program like that for win2000 besides ipconfig? Any ideas on what may be missing or conflicting?

For troubleshooting - see what you can ping from the second computer (LAN and internet), both by IP address and URL.

I seem to be able to ping everything even yahoo by the ip number, I just can't seem to ping anything by url. So whats this mean about my dns, other than its screwed. Also I went back to the IE5 and pulled yahoo up by the ip address and that seemed to work. so how do I get this dns issue corrected?

Thanks,
KK

also on the first computer, I got the dns by running ipconfig and under the Connection Specific DNS Suffix it had atl.mediaone.net I just pinged atl.mediaone.net and that gave the ip address. Is this correct?

I got it working finally. Found out that that dns suffix had nothing to do with the dns. I learned a new augument today /all I've been doing this ipconfig where it would only give the dns suffix. with the /all it give alittle more. Once I popped in the dns on the second computer, bamm, it started working. Thanks guys for your help.
