Windows 2000 Active Directory: How can I remove a domain controller that doesnt exist?

One of my backup DCs had to be unplugged immediately so I couldnt demote it. Since then the system has been redone with the same name. I need to remove the previous system from the server list before I can add the new system, but it won't let me. Each time I try I get "The Directory Service is Busy"

Any ideas?

This is an ugly situation. Consider calling MS for paid support.... it'll be worth it.

If you want to go this alone, search "metadata cleanup" in the KB.

It's really not necessary to call MS. It's not a piece of cake either though.
You should certainly have no problems removing the DC from Active Directory using NTDSUTIL.
Here is the link. Exercise caution when using NTDSUTIL and follow the article to the letter. Don't be afraid, just be cautious. The steps in this KB work.

I've been through this exact situation a bunch of times (playing clean-up for silly admins). The lesson here is to ALWAYS demote your DC's before removal, hehe.

Even after following the KB article, you may have issues adding in the server as a DC again because its computer name is exactly the same. Consider changing the name of the machine to something slightly different.

You will know you have sucessfully removed the DC by checking the Active Directory Sites and Services snap in. Open up the site the machine is in, and then expand the server object in question. If there is no NTDS settings object underneath the server object, then Active Directory no longer regards that machine as a DC.

Good Luck

thanks for the link saltin... i tried that, but for some reason my win2k resource kit doesnt have ADSI Edit. are there different versions of the resource kit?
