Windows 10 "You need to install an app for this task" on sign in

Wondering if anyone has seen this before. Happened when one of the kids was signing on to the computer today. They were just signed on a couple hours ago, but I had switched to my account in between. My workaround was to sign in our local PC account then switch to hers, which worked fine. When I google this, all I get is Microsoft "professionals" telling people how to restart, and how to do a system restore (more than one thread had these "brilliant" ideas). I was just wondering if you had any idea what app it is referring to.

Do you see a strange entry in startup, perhaps with a blank (white) icon? If so, disable it and restart the PC to see if the message reappears.

Found a fix, appears to be an issue with KB5041582 (currently an optional update). I did remove a couple things from Windows startup, but no change. Uninstalled KB5041582, and sign in is back to normal. I did a little looking, not a lot, but didn't see anyone else reporting this.

Found a fix, appears to be an issue with KB5041582 (currently an optional update). I did remove a couple things from Windows startup, but no change. Uninstalled KB5041582, and sign in is back to normal. I did a little looking, not a lot, but didn't see anyone else reporting this.

So, it auto-reinstalled, so I was back to square one. I noticed that my Gmail that used to register some apps from the Store had "unlinked." One I told it to re-link, the problem has come back only sporadically. I am still not sure what Microsoft did to break that, except that they seem to really dislike running Windows without a Microsoft account now.

As stated in the OP, this only happened on one account, the Microsoft account. My main account is just a standard username and password.

I encountered it the other day using a Microsoft app ClipChamp video editor, even though I have it locally it wouldn't let me use it without signing in using Microsoft account. Which kind of did not surprise me would eventually happen for MS apps. Now you say it can happen with non-Microsoft apps when installed from the MS Store?

Glad we are starting to see what this is. So the Store is allowing us to have apps installed that have the potential to lock us out of their Microsoft accounts. That is so great!
