Windows 10 Update uninstalled my graphics drivers. WTF?

Geez. Pretty irritating. I have a Windows 10 net-top computer which is Atom based with nVidia ION. Screen is 1366x768.

I don't use it much, but when I installed Windows 10 on it, everything worked fine after I installed the nVidia drivers. I could play back 1080p H.264 just fine using DXVA. It was working fine as recently as a few weeks ago. However, all that I've done with it in the last few weeks is allowed it to install updates.

Today I decided to use it again and for some reason my video playback either wouldn't work at all (Windows Media Player), or else would be all stuttery (MPC-HC). Didn't know why. Then I found out the display driver was the Microsoft Basic Display Driver. Reinstalled the nVidia driver, and everything works fine again.

What gives? Why is Windows Update replacing the August 24, 2015 nVidia GeForce 341.81 display driver with a generic MS driver?

August 24, 2015 nVidia GeForce 341.81 display driver

Something doesn't make a lot of sense, because version 341.81 is dated quite a bit older than August, 2015.
If you look for Geforce Ion drivers:
http://www.geforce.com/drivers
There's no Windows 10 drivers offered there for download.
You don't say whether it's 32-bit or 64-bit Windows 10, but neither type is shown as being available.

Only for Windows 8.1 & earlier.

I agree, it's most likely due to the difference in official support. You may just have to tell Windows not to automatically do driver updates.

Yeah, it's a Windows 8.x driver. The date on this 341.81 is 2015-08-24, and it's 64-bit.

When I installed Windows 10 it defaulted to the MS Basic Display Adapter, but I could understand that since it's a new OS install. That's happened before with me with new OS installs, so it wasn't a big surprise. Then I installed the latest nVidia drivers then and everything was fine. Updates also worked fine... up until some time in the last couple of weeks. With updates in those last couple of weeks, it reverted back to the MS Basic Display Adapter.

I hope this isn't an ongoing problem for MS and nVidia, because it's pretty annoying. I don't care if Windows 10 doesn't see an officially supported Windows driver. It's stupid that MS Windows 10 Update would unilaterally decide to install a basically useless MS driver. Thus, I have now turned off all device driver updates.

ALL my software control for my ATi drivers are also gone.

No more CCC.

No ability to adjust driver display quality.

Autodetect utility says no support.

Win10 likes to uninstall drivers sometimes. It will definitely do it if you're doing Win10 version upgrades (Insider builds, for example). It uninstalls my PCIe NIC drivers every time it updates, despite the fact that the drivers come bundled with the OS.
