Windows 10, Start window says "New"

I'm running Windows 10 and sometimes when I go to shut down my pc, there appears the word "new" by All Apps. What is going on and why does that happen?

It means a new app was installed.

Yep.

Hardly anything mystical, and very self-explanatory. Did you not even click through? I don't know why Windows feels like it has to remind you that you installed something, but it's done that since at least XP, just with color instead.

Possibly an update to an app is causing it. Did you look at the list to see if anything has a new tag?

I wonder if Windows Update did it and reset some install dates.Or some apps updated on their own (do you use Google Chrome? It updates all the time), making them appear new to whatever trigger that uses.

It may be that the app was updated through the app store. Was it a UWP app or a w32 app?

The newest Insider Build has a few Red Stone things going on, just installed it this morning.

I imagine some other things in WIN 10 has some updates filtering down, probably.

Not sure what version you're using.

But some new updates to it in general might have leeched around a bit, in general.

What's weird is on mine it says "new" next to all apps, so I go in there and nothing says new next to it. Next time I open the start menu it doesn't say new anymore.

I've just figured it is a minor bug that is more annoying to OCD people like me than anything else.

Interesting. I haven't noticed this but I'll pay attention.

I noticed that if I delete desktop items in an explorer window, the icons linger on the desktop. I have to refresh the desktop to make them disappear. If I try to delete the ghost icons it says file not found. This apparently has occurred to people over versions of Windows going back to XP, so I don't know if it's Windows 10 specific or what. If I delete from the desktop itself, the icons go along with the file for the ride to the recycle bin.
