Has anyone ran into this? I installed the "Free" upgrade and about a month down the road my start menu isn't working anymore. I tried the fixes that I could find on the net to no avail. Just wondering if there might be another work around or if anyone else has the same problem.

yep, start menu and cortana did nothing when you click on them. I did some fix I've found online, which broke start menu items when it came back..
This seems to be prevalent if you upgrade from Windows 7

Didn't have this on the laptop and desktop I upgraded from 7 to 10, but I have heard others with this problem.

If Windows is activated, you could just download the ISO with the Creation Tool and do a clean install. That should get rid of whatever is causing the problem.

Open task manager, end the Shellexperiencehost.ext process. That will likely correct it at least for a bit.

I was having issues with that occasionally (also upgraded from win7), along with other things like action center etc. An update recently seemed to have greatly reduced that issue for me.

For Cortana, make sure your indexes aren't screwy. Mine were. It was my fault as I had messed with library folder locations a few times in my Win7 install and some of that old stuff was still in there. Cortana wasn't happy with that. Once I cleaned up my index folders and had it reindex everything that corrected a lot of weird sluggishness with searches.

Thanks everyone I did a clean install and it seems to be working now.

this is a totally unacceptable solution for an OS that MS is pushing so heavily on everyone to upgrade to.

Just went over to my mom's thinking she installed spyware or something that screwed up the start menu. NOPE. it's friggin windows 10 itself?! f*** this s***

I've clean installed 10 about 5 times on my desktop pc since August, twice since 1511 was released. I'm not sure but I believe that the forced updates and in particular the cumulative ones are responsible for causing file and folder errors. I'm hoping that the Redstone release will address these issues and I figure at this pace I'll have to clean install at least one more time between now and then. 10 was even buggered on my tablet, it was an 8.1 upgrade, and when I sent it in to asus for warranty work they restored it to 8.1. I upgraded it back to 10 right after I got it but I'm thinking now that I might roll it back to 8.1 and leave it there.

Does the power user menu still work (right-click on start)? I helped a lady whose Surface Pro would not respond to left clicks on the start button but the alt-menu came up fine. I ran Adwcleaner and it found a few things that it removed. Then I ran Junkware Removal Tool and it found a few more, then I rebooted it and the start menu came up fine. Good to know there are other things to try for future cases.

I had the same issue on a laptop I was working on last week at work. But I was able to fix the start menu and task bar issue by creating a new user account.

Just throwing this out there (since I see I posted back in October about this) but ever since the 1511 update I haven't had a single recurrence of the non-responsive start menu or action center.
