After upgrading from Windows 7 Pro 64 to Windows 10 Pro 64 I started to notice some of my non-OS drives were having an increased amount of storage space being gobbled up without anything additional being installed to them.
Using Spacemonger and a program I found called "TakeOwnershipEx" I found that the "*:/System Volume Infomation" folder had quite a bit of space in it. After looking into what it is it's apparently the System Protection tool that backs up/ties into previous versions of files and folders from what I could understand. The timestamps for all the files were post 7/29/15 which leads me to believe either A. Nothing was here before Windows 10, or B. Windows 10 deleted all the info from Windows 7.
I went into system properties/system protection tab and found that protection was turned off for all drives. I went into one of the drives I noticed the ballooning happening and the only option I had was the "Max Usage" slider, I couldn't even turn system protection on. I moved the slider down a bit from what it was, pressed okay, and instantly watched all the previous space free up.
Not quite sure if it was never working in Windows 7, or if Windows 10 is behaving strangely. Anyways I just wanted to pass this along in case anyone else was running into this.
