I have two almost identical W10 laptops, this problem is on just one of them. What's up? Can't find a fix in Settings.

Display is set to turn off after 10 minutes, but why do I then have to sign in?

I've got a desktop system that is having this same issue. Apparently Microsoft has yet again managed to screw something up with the last two feature updates, and it has broken the ability of some machines to enter sleep.

One thing that helps with mine is to check Windows update. For some people (my case included), it has been noted that installing any pending updates (including any "optional" security previews) fixes the issue for a while. However, it always seems to come back within a few weeks irregardless of what I do to that one machine. I've tried every fix that I could find online, and have even gone so far as doing a clean install, but nothing works to permanently resolve the issue.

Microsoft really needs to suspend feature updates for a quarter or two and just concentrate on fixing bugs. God knows there are enough of them that they just never seem to get around to doing anything about....

Did you change the sign in option in settings, accounts, sign-in options?

No, I didn't... but I just did after doing this search:

Not sure how it's going to work out. I couldn't change anything without turning off letting Windows Hello handling things. I just turned that off, will see what happens. Now, why the machine was requiring a sign in after 10 minutes when the screen was supposed to turn off boggles my mind.

Windows has had a history with sleep and hibernate issues. Head to the forums the maker of the motherboard has for more info.

Per the title, the machine is not entering sleep, but the screen is set to timeout after 10 minutes. You probably have it set to require a password after the screen times out.

But I'm not using a screen saver. It goes to a logon screen when tapping a key or opening the lid.
A screen saver is a moving picture or pattern that displays on the screen(s) of your PC after you have not been active on the PC for specified period of time to wait. Screen savers were originally used to save older, monochromatic monitors from damage, but now they are mainly a way to personalize your PC or enhance its security by offering password protection.

From the title: "Windows 10, on AC supposed to go to sleep "Never" but after some minutes I have to unlock... WHY?"

Please explain what you mean. Screen saver can be part of the timeout, and you can use just a black screen as the screen saver.

So this is a laptop, correct? What brand is it, and what specific model. firmware and drivers up to date?

What power profile are you using, and what are the power settings with screen info and lid info, specifically?

Just because it's set to never go to sleep when on AC, doesn't mean the lid and screen settings are the same. Did you check any of the settings in the link?

Well, I'll get to this. Thank you.

I actually had the setting for AC as 10 minutes before turning off the screen, but Never for going to sleep. These were my settings all along. This morning I changed the screen timeout at Never instead of 10 minutes on AC to see if that would at least keep me from having the sign in so much. I can always close the lid, which puts the laptop to sleep.

Edit: I just changed back to turn off screen after 10 minutes and checked my screen saver. It's been set to None all along and I left it as None.

Right, but see the attached picture for the "login required" checkbox

Also, if you're using a laptop that has vendor provided power management software, check that as well.

Nothing I did resolved the problem until I did a search again a few days ago and found this site, which had a method that worked:

Answer:

There are two:

1. For battery
2. For plugged in

This shows you hot to change for on battery, but the setting for plugged in is right there, I just configured for plugged in.

To sign-in automatically after resuming from sleep, use these steps:

Open Start.
Search for gpedit and select the top result to open the Local Group Policy Editor.
Browse the following path: Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > Power Management > Sleep Settings
Double-click the Require a password when a computer wakes (on battery) policy. ...
Check the Disable option. ...
Click Apply.
