Windows 10 not displaying any text

My sister gave me a laptop to look at, it's a sony vaio PCG 61313L running windows 10. She said she was having issues with it and wanted to see if I could save her documents to a cd or whatever. The big issue with it is I can't see any text, desktop icons have no text, the programs I opened don't have any text, most of stuff in windows don't have any text. Windows defender does have text and am currently doing a virus scan.

How can I get text back? If I am able to get her stuff saved, I will try to reinstall windows. The question is can I get text back without having to do a reinstall? Could this be a virus or a setting inside of windows that is messed up?

After just restarting the computer, it scanned and repaired drive c and now everything looks fine, I can see text on everything. Since the scan and repair drive fixed it, does that indicate a hardware or software issue? Would reinstalling windows stop it from happening again?

It could be that the system was not shut down properly earlier and NTFS file system gets corrupted or some files are damaged, but was fixed by scan and repair, which either repairs or restores system files.

If you check event viewer and there is no disk errors, it should be fine.
