Just saw this:

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...ndows-10/5c0b9368-a9e8-4238-b1e4-45f4b7ed2fb9

Is Media Center supported in Windows 10?
No. Persons who need to use Media Center should consider carefully before upgrading from their previous version of Windows. The Windows 10 upgrade will automatically remove any installations of Media Center.

So what are the alternatives if I need Media Center?
Your best option is to continue running your existing version of Windows with Media Center.
Windows 7 editions that include Media Center will continue to be supported until January 2020.
Windows 8 Pro with Media Center will continue to be supported until January 2023.

Its like the start menu, they removed so they sell an entire OS in the future with the promise to bring old stuff back

Or so few people were using it that maintaining support for it was a ludicrous idea.

I know I'm not heartbroken over this.

You'll be surprised how many use it,I use now and then for my USB DTV dongle via WMC which I have been doing since Vista days up to present OS ie Win8.1 so has gone through several OS upgrades.

I'll have to look for a third party alternative software for Win10 it seems.

Same goes for my laptop as well.

Well it should not come as a surprise as the writing was on the wall for it.
The media center in windows 8 was pretty much just a copy of what was in win 7 with just enough work on it to make sure it works in 8.

That and there was not included in the tech previews, and no official talk about it, being cagey when asked about it

Although it does suck for those that used it, and that they strung people along, although they may have not decided till recently

Well I've just tried my Leadtek WinFast PVR2 software and that seems to work fine in Win8.1 x64 so hoping that works ok in Win10 final for my tv watching.

Maybe the issues bear some similarity to automobiles of a vintage nature that needed leaded gasoline.

There are a whole bunch of scenarios in which change is unfavorable.

Would it mean people were stupid because they began using Media Center with their AVR and HDTVs? Or that a vast majority of people were stupid for not doing so?

The "vast majority" want effortless solutions to everything -- a natural human tendency. Still . . .

There's insufficient justification for MS to completely discontinue MC in the latest OS..

Look what they did with their "old" software. I can still run MS Office 2003 Pro on a Windows 7-64 system -- no problem, not a hitch, updates still spill in, compatibility updates for docx and xlsx files of later versions.

Try, for instance, to run NUANCE Paperport 10 on Windows 7. Nichts. Nada. No cigar.

So, if Win 10 is part of a "service" M$ is offering, why can't they at least bundle a successor to Media Center?

Fa Chrissake! I use it for my pictures, videos, music-- audio, DVR, TV, Netflix.

So I'm either stuck with Win 7 on the relevant machine? Or I have to find a replacement and go through the conversions and disruptions I've lived with since IBM-AT days?!

Frankly, I've got no reason to upgrade to Win10, even if it is "free". Unless something (freeware or relatively cheap) as good as WMC emerges for my USB TV Tuner, I guess I'll stick with Win8.1 w/Start8.

Totally not surprised by MS decision to abandon WMC, since it has no future. With the growing number of cord cutters, and the already small number of WMC users, there was no way MS could justify spending resources on WMC.

I tried WMC and found it to be pretty good, but preferred SageTV over it. However, I gave up on it after canceling my cable a couple of years ago. Netflix and iTunes provides a good enough alternative for me, and XBMC is an excellent media player for my own media.

I am a fan of KODI but don't use any of the tuner capability. Just watch movies and play mame and nintendo games.

I'm a bit surprised, main reason is Win10 is supposed to handle it all like Win8.1 etc so supposed to be a very versatile OS ,removing WMC and not having a Microsoft replacement seems a little surprising.

You want an OS that handles it all but remove something like WMC (with no Microsoft alternative )that has many uses and we all know what they are.

It would not take much in resources since its nothing new and been around for quite awhile, playing music, watching TV/movies etc is a lot of things many uses do on their PCs with WMC.

I'm sure third party alternatives will cash in on this hole in Win10 OS.

Side note: They can find ideas for a new OS but not WMC or a new alternative, does not make sense for such a large company like Microsoft.
