Windows 10 just borked my desktop

Earlier today I had to do a clean install of 10 to clear up some problems and just a few minutes ago it lost the efi bootloader and the repair couldn't fix it. I'm falling back to 8.1 pro as I type this and have to leave 10 alone on my desktop. My laptop, this pc, and my tablet work fine with it. I am so unhappy about how 10 has been behaving for me on the desktop. MS needs to do some additional work on it. If you have an asus maximus vii hero stay away from 10.

Lol it's not the motherboard's fault for what was happening I can guarantee. A Mobo doesn't care what OS is loaded. That's why you can run Linux or even mac OSX on a mobo built for windows.

Not true by a long shot. Things like BIOS support for various ACPI tables and versions, determine which OS you can run on it. Some mobos lack proper support for certain OS. (Not talking about OS driver support, that's a separate issue.)

Ok show me where in the documentation it says this motherboard can only run such and such an OS......you can`t....

10 was acting strangely as in randomly disconnecting my Logitech g910 keyboard or any keyboard even Microsoft keyboards were doing the same thing. My bios is the latest uefi from asus and never had a problem on 8.1 with usb peripherarls. Even my Logitech g700s continued to work just fine while the keyboards were not. I cannot be a beta tester for MS on my main rig so 8.1 pro x64 stays on this desktop until I complete my school or they release SP1 with massive fixes. Sad thing is I really like the 10 interface with the thin borders and all.

I've run into instances in the past where there is just no driver support for certain chipsets etc for newer operating systems. Doubt that is the case with this board the OP has, but I've run into that sort of thing before.

So your saying that you can't run windows 10 on a mobo that works with 7 or 8? No I don't believe that

What are you, a Microsoft shill?

It's not hard to believe that Windows 10 support for certain hardware configurations is borked. I'm sure there's a ton of hardware out there with nonexistent or buggy drivers. You can blame device manufacturers for not having drivers in place, but really there's a dual responsibility there both on Microsoft's part and the manufacturer's part to make the transition as smooth as possible.

Correct, my motherboard is only two years old, and is not supported. I tried for 2 hours today trying to install win10 and kept getting errors. Turns out my asus motherboard is not support because of the bios type it uses. Lots of asus boards apparently use a new bios that can't do it.

10 had issues interfacing with the uefi bios on my pc and it showed when it could only manage a single partition on my ssd for a uefi install when it should've created 3 like 8.1 did. 10 was a slug in comparison in booting and everywhere else. MS needs to polish it up more before I will consider trying it again on my desktop. My tablet and laptop work fine with it. While this was happening I was using the latest bios from asus 2801.

With the inception of UEFI and mainstream OS support in Windows 8, it is very much believable that one can adversely affect the other.

I am just surprised that the repair options on the iso wouldn't come with repair options for the boot loader.

sounds like a user issue...not a windows issue!

Switch BIOS to Legacy:

With a clean install no UEFI here.

I had 10 TP running on a q6600 with NVidia 780i chipset and never had an issue with it. Just before I sold it I installed vista hp 64 bit to give the buyer a legitimate os. 10 works fine on my asus laptop in uefi mode but it definitely had issues with my asus maximus vii hero mb. The random disconnecting of my kb's was killing me in class where I cannot lose them during a timed test that I cannot start over. Power to the kb remained in place but 10 refused to accept input from them, any of them and I used my Logitech g910, ione scorpius m10 and Microsoft natural wireless all with the same result so it was the os and not any particular manufacturer. My mouse, Logitech g700s, worked fine the entire time this was happening.

A new BIOS should be more easily supported TBH. I'm running a system built in 2012 and it works fine, granted I'm on a ROG branded Motherboard which is Asus' top of the line brand name and not one of the lower end branded boards if there's a difference in the BIOS software.

I just wanted to add that I'm back on 10 via windows update which did a decent enough job of not losing my programs and settings this time. I'm going to give it a whirl and see if the cumulative update corrected the issues I was seeing the other day. If I lose my kb or see any weirdness I have to go back to 8.1 and stay there so I can do my school work without worrying about losing the ability to type during a timed test.

Edit: I've already rolled back to 8.1 where everything is working just fine because the upgrade just doesn't get it right on my system.
