Yes, yes, for the life of the device, after that think Netflix. Change out a mobo, not the same device. I'm ok with the subscription based business model though, the wave of the future. I will be updating to 10 anyway.

Windows 10 is free for the life of the device, period. It's not free for merely one year as you originally stated.

I said that because of this that JackMDS has in the article which is stated in many other articles on the matter:

"What happens after the first year is over? We don’t yet know what will happen if you upgrade a device to Windows 10 and then want to reinstall Windows 10 after that first year is over. It can only go one of two ways: It will be explicitly supported. Or it will not be. We don’t know."

So we'll see how it pans out. And we all know that no one reinstalls or changes hardware ever around here of course. But if you think you will never have to pay MS anything ever again after you upgrade, you are dreaming.

We don't have to see how it pans out. This is directly from Microsoft and it's written in plain English, which you're clearly familiar with. I'm also well aware of what constitutes a device. That wasn't your argument though, you're just attempting to shift goal posts.

There is a difference between certain situations that we do not know yet, and your Imaginary assertion:

Freebie to obtain it, after the year you will have to go to a subscription or yearly fee for new features/updates, not including security updates I would imagine though.

The life of the device is how Windows has been since Vista. You saying it now like it's brand new does not, in fact, change that.

I have a Windows 8.1 key, as well as several for 7, that are not currently installed on any machines. I suspect there will be no good ways to get those updated to 10 without committing them to something, but we'll see.

But windows has a refresh feature now, so it should be able to reset to factory default without a reinstall.

Refresh is basically the same as choosing the upgrade option and installing over the existing Windows without reformatting which is similar to XP's repair installation. Same thing, different name.

I wonder why MS didn't also include Vista with the fresh install mandated option? Seems like they'd be able to get as many people onto Windows 10 as possible...

I was a skeptic at first. I used windows 8, gave it the experiment it deserved, but it just wasn't my cup of tea but this is good for gaming.

I'm sure the reason is many fold but a large one will probably be the age of Vista systems. It wasn't uncommon for 512MB of ram on entry level computers when vista was released, which was at least part of the reason it received such bad praise since that murdered it's performance. Can't blame them for wanting to avoid a repeat, especially since Windows 10 looks to bet quite good.
