Windows 10 Insider Preview builds

I have Windows 10 Pro build 10130 installed in a VM on my laptop. I hadn't touched it in awhile and started it up today to try something at work, and it is no longer activated and it has a link that says "install the latest version of Windows." Problem is, after clicking on the link, Windows Store launched, said it had to be updated, and then it closed. And now, when I try to launch it, it starts to open and then disappears. I have restarted and I still can't get it to work.

I downloaded the Windows 10 installer/media creator, ran that, but it ended up needing a license key.

I thought you could continue to use Windows 10 without a key if you continued to keep up with the insider preview builds.
But how do I get back caught up to the latest build?

Windows 10 as a VM installation may be the problem.
This should work:
1. Fresh VM and install of the RTM build you've already prepared.
Skip where it asks for a product key: the word "Skip" appears on screen; click on that.
2. Go to system settings and enable Windows Insider & Fast updates.
3. The latest Windows Insider update (build 10547) should then be able to download and install.

I guess the Skip option isn't available if you are using the Media Creation Tool to perform an upgrade install.

When I asked a similar question:

The basic answer is: once Windows 10 was released, only upgraders would continue receiving preview builds. Those installing in fresh (on a VM, like you and me), would be stopped at the final level.

Furthermore, Microsoft has left themselves the option to de-activate these free installs at some point. Mine is still going fine, just not open to preview builds.
