Every day this machine, Windows 10, ver. 1511, receives a definition for Windows Defender--every day--
What's up with that ? Is MS fighting some plague we don't know about ? Is there a rhyme or reason to the constant definitions ?

Yes, and yes.

Edit: Why wouldn't you want your anti-virus definitions updated daily? It's not like those updates require a reboot.

Based on your response, I assume the daily repetition is not a bug. While I am paranoid, I am also curious. So I would like to know why the daily updates are necessary? What is happening on the ground in the fight against attacks? Is there a source which logs the methodology ?

IMHO developing further its malware/virus protection is perhaps the most important thing MS can do develop binary consumer computers at this stage .

Anti-virus/malware/network inspection technology is definition based and the updates keep it up to date with the latest trends/threats.

Some antivirus updates more than once a day. Off the top of my head I can't remember which ones do that. But you wouldn't want an AV that updates any less often than daily.

For defender av updates, yes they will generally update daily. as an comparison, Symantec has and option for rapid releases which could give numerous ones a day if needed

But I do agree that these updates through windows updates are sometimes annoying, as think that they should be done within Defender itself / silently somehow and say maybe a round up for that month pushed into windows update

Symantec averages an update every 4 hours.

I don't think They do the "Rapid Releases" any more. I had to write a script to get it to updater more frequently.
