Windows 10 Consumer Preview release date???

I've been using Windows 10 technical preview on one of my pc's, but I see that it expires in just over 2 months. One of my friends is about to put together another PC, and so am I. I had told him a couple of weeks ago that it was likely that Microsoft would release the Windows 10 Consumer Preview edition at their big shindig about a week ago, but I still can't seem to nail down anything about a Consumer Preview. (the actual release date for it)

My understanding is that the Technical Preview is less likely to have an upgrade path to the eventual retail version. In fact, I'm not sure if it simply stops working in a couple of months, or what. (maybe we are expected to install 10 Consumer Preview edition by that time?)

Has anyone heard any specific information on the expected release date for Windows 10 Consumer Preview edition?

From how I understand it, I doubt that the tech previews will have any sort of upgrade path to the full final version. In any case, I wouldn't trust that anyway and always would go with a fresh clean install of the new OS.

If these systems are to be "for the long term" then I would install Windows 8.1 (or 8 or 7). It's my understanding you will get the final gold Win10 for free (for the first year).

Along with what everyone else has said, other than Jack's expiration window we have no clue when a consumer preview will be ready. The OS is still under intensive development and features are in an incomplete state.

I have found it interesting that Windows 10 technical preview has been much more stable as a Steam game system for my kids than XP was. The same hardware with XP had some sort of crash or lockup every day or every other day. Using the same games, (mostly from Steam), same hardware, and only difference being the OS update, the system only has a lockup maybe every 3 days now. I would consider that to be quite an improvement in stability, and I really liked that so many things were simply auto detected, and the drivers & such just automatically downloaded.

I remember XP had a lot of sound crash issues back then hardware wise,from Vista onwards sound system in the OS was improved/changed for a better and more stable gaming experience etc...

If you have kept installing the update builds you should have the expire date extended.

I think the one that was release is the consumer preview, but they just did not named it as such, from what I recall..

Apparently the current build is termed Tech Preview 2 internally so...

My guess

Current version is the consumer preview, just not badged as such.

They will release a release preview maybe july/august (i.e feature complete)
release candidate maybe september (probably safe to use as your primary OS at this point)
final release november

So far there have been regular updates that can be upgraded in a straight line or skipping a upgrade...I would bet on there being a path to the final build.

That said, you should NOT be using a preview as your main build. Dual boot it or run a VM...but don't make it your primary OS. You're setting yourself up for data loss and disappointment.

Well some people say that this upgrade will be free,some people say that one has to pay at some time,i think that Microsoft is misleading us! Microsoft should be strait with us and tell us the true story and tell us we have to pay the upgrade once final release.
well; i'm ready for them,i have win 7 installed on my Original HDD ready to go, they do not fool me.

They're not doing their best to make things clear I must admit, but they did say it will be free for the first year and there's no talk of any subscription. I think MS simply want people to move to Windows 10 so they can get an app store going. Sounds like from this point forward Windows 10 will simply be the platform that they sell software on, rather than the product itself.

How is MS misleading you? MS has been quite clear: if you decide to upgrade to Windows 10 within the first year after its release (NOT preview, RELEASE. RTM. Some point in the future.) the upgrade AND updates are free "for the life of the device." If you do not upgrade within that 1 year window and later upgrade, MS has not yet decided if they will charge you. They have also said there will NOT be a subscription model.

That seems pretty clear to me. Regardless, my warning to the OP stands: it's a preview build and should be treated as such.

Can we upgrade to Win 10 RTM from Win 10 Preview?
