Windows 10 - Chrome shutting down on its own

I am a n00b and not very well versed in computer lingo so please bear with me.

I am pulling out my hair because Windows 10 seems to have a problem keeping the Chrome browser open. Chrome is randomly closing down seemingly for no reason that I can determine.

Sometimes I can work for a few days without the problem occurring at all and other times (like today) it closes down repeatedly every few minutes of working. In fact, I’ve started this post 3 times and lost all my composing each time before I wised up and am now composing in Word so I can paste the entire message when I’m ready to publish.

Here’s my history. I bought a new ASUS laptop with Windows 8.1 at Costco and immediately had my computer tech upgrade to Windows 10. As soon as I fired it up it started with the above described issue.

I tried remedying the instability by adjusting various settings but to no avail. It seemed like the browser shut down was happening because my typing fingers would ever so slightly brush random keys and/or the track pad and bang, my whole screen would return to the desktop and I would lose any work I had in progress and would have to go to History to reopen any tabs I still needed to review.

I then took the machine back to my tech and had him redo the Windows 10 upgrade but this time via a clean install.

In spite of the new upgrade the same problem still happened over and over and over. I dumbed down the track pad sensitivity and looked for keyboard sensitivity adjustments but determined that there were none. During my search I stumbled across others who were complaining about ASUS keyboard sensitivity and the company’s failure to address their complaints and requests for help.

Since I had 90 days to return the laptop to Costco I chose that option after two months of frustration and purchased a Dell Inspiron 5 1500 series laptop with Windows 10 factory installed as a replacement.

It has been somewhat better than the ASUS but I am having the same problem with Chrome shutting down. Sometimes I can go for days without encountering the problem and then boom, for no reason I can determine it happens repeatedly. In fact, this is the 3rd time I’ve had to restart this post because Chrome closed while I was writing. I wised up and am now composing in Word and will paste the message in when it comes time to publish.

It seems that just as it happens I have ever so slightly brushed a random key as my fingers are moving across the keyboard but if I open the browser back up and try to reproduce what may have happened I cannot get it to repeat.

I tend to have a lot of tabs open and at first I thought that I might be over taxing the browser’s capabilities but no, it also happens with just two or three tabs open.

So in closing, I thought it was an ASUS issue but the Dell has it too. So the question is, is it a Windows 10 /Chrome browser compatibility issue or is it a user issue and I need to be doing something differently? Settings maybe? I use a an optical mouse instead of the track pad.

I’m hoping someone can enlighten me as to the problem and hopefully supply a remedy. I have invested a lot of time and money into getting a new laptop working. It seems like I was way better off with my old Windows 7 Samsung that crapped out after 3 and a half years.

Thanks,
David in Hawaii

Never had this issue on any of my laptops that were upgraded to Windows 10. These kind of issues are usually related to the trackpad doing stuff randomly or being overly sensitive.

You need to ensure that you have installed the latest driver for your trackpad that is actually meant for Windows 10.

Under your laptop, there is a service tag, go into this page and enter the service tag then search for drivers for your laptop using that service tag. Ensure Windows 10 is selected as the OS and see if there are any touchpad drivers there:

http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/Products/?app=drivers

Dell Inspiron 15 is not the full model, there should be 4 other digits after that. If you tell me what digits they are I can find the direct download link for that touchpad driver IF DELL has released it anyway.

Open up Event Viewer, look under application for any application crash reports, paste those on Google's forums. Might be a bug.

Thanks Berryracer. I had the wrong model number. It's an Inspiron 15 5000 series model 5558.

Escrow4, I would try your suggestion but I am not very computer literate. I have no idea how to access whatever Event Viewer is or what Google forum you are suggesting.

-> Start menu, type event

-> Open Event Viewer

-> Left side arrow for Windows logs

-> Application

-> Optional - right side filter current log, filter by error or critical

Chrome forums are here:

https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!forum/chrome

Also, hamburger menu in chrome -> top right -> help -> report an issue.

This seems to be a Chrome bug, maybe your user profile (are you logged in with a gmail account?) may be corrupted.
