Window Kit In Antec SX830 Case?

barlav

Senior member
Has anyone successfully installed a window in the Antec SX830 case? I'm considering adding one and was just wondering how easy this would be to do with one of those window kits advertised at pcmods.com?

barlav,

When I get time I want to do the same thing(pcmods window kit), but I haven't decided how I am going to work around the latch. I remember seeing some pix this guy took of his SX with a window mod, but I haven't been able to locate the link.

Here's a thread I started for SX mods.

Keep us posted.

you can pretty much install a window on any case... ive seen a window on an sx case, they shaped the window around the latch which looked pretty slick... i got my own ideas on what i wanan do, unfortuantely i have no money 🙁

I was wondering about the latch too. I was thinking of placing a vertical rectangular window just to the right of the latch. Unfortunately there won't be a direct view of the motherboard/cpu but I should still be able to see it looking in and to the left. I think I can move my cables around enough to clear up space to make the window view better. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Barlav:

I'm in almost EXACTLY the same situation as you... I just ordered the rectangle window kit from pcmods because I don't really feel like cutting my own plexiglass window. I planned on doing like you said and putting a window as close to the latch as possible, withought curving around it. It does kinda suck you cant see the CPU from looking head on, but from and angle you should be able to do it. What tool are you planning on using? I have a dremel that I was gonna try out, but that thick metal door is gonna be a pain!

whalen,
I was going to use a saber saw. You'll have to let me know how your dremel works. I agree, that door is pretty thick. Thank god for power tools. Let me know how yours turns out since it looks like you will be going first!! 🙂

I cut my side with aviation snips. Just take real small nips. Don't have a smooth acting sabre saw. But the snips work good, especially if they are new. Actually real fast. I cut a hole for a 120 and was thinking about a bezel but it came out so good can almost go without. With a grill you would never notice the slight serrations.

I have a window in my Enlight and let me tell you guys, the key is broad bends. Do not make sharp bends, make them nice and curvy. It's a pain in the ass to get the molding and window in.

Well, I just finished putting in the window in my SX830. I bought the rectange window kit from PcMods.com. I ended up putting it just to the right of the latch because I didn't feel that confident in making curves around the latch. I started cutting with my dremel and reinforced cutoff wheels, but that was taking forever, so I switched to my Jig Saw... let me say, that worked WONDERFULLY. I was worried that it wouldn't be a direct view of the CPU and mobo, but thats only if you look straight on. If you look at a slight angle, you can see everything in there. Looking straight on, as far as you can see to the left is the northbridge. Regardless, it looks great, and was much easier than I anticipated, this being my first mod. The other nice thing about the window position is that the area to the left of the window and below the latch is a PERFECT spot for a blow hole... I don't have a digital camera, but I'll try to get some pics scanned in..

for the ones that are really handy with the dremel. Take the latch off and then trace the latch punch out onto a card. Cut out the card then trace the cut out on the door near the top of the case. Leave some line up tabs which reference the door edge as this is the only crucial dimension. Reinstall the latch. With the latch repositioned fit window at will. Problem is the original punch out comes close to the edge and glass may interfere with closing. No biggy just be aware.

Hehe, i forgot...sorry guys. Like I said before, I don't have a digital camera, but I'll definately take some pictures tonight and get them developed this weekend.

Man, I kept forgeting to get these developed...but they finally are done. Out of like 10-15 pics I took, I only got 3 decent ones 🙁. I didn't get any good pictures of my neon light, but I have a decent shot of the window, which is the main thing. You can also see some of the other mods. They are:

PCMods Baybus
Front mounted Neon switch (in 3.5 bay)
Top 120MM Blow Hole
Side 92MM Intake

Pictures

...please be nice. This is my first mod. I'd like to hear what you have to say though...be it good or bad! 🙂

I think it looks pretty good. I'm considering doing a window mod to the system I will be building soon but am afraid of screwing it up. I know from experience that I am not good very good at building/repairing things around the house. I can only imagine the kind of damage I could do by taking a borrowed dremel or saber saw to my case. 🙁
