I rented a car last night. Didn't take their insurance because my own personal car insurance covers me for everything. My credit card also provides me with decent insurance (secondary?). I woke up this morning and there was about a quarter sized crack in the windshield on the passenger side. No idea how it got there. Doesn't look malicious but who knows. What to do?

You didnt get a damage waiver? Youre lucky its just a window because you would have been crying. I know people always moan about it and call it stupid but it has saved me so many times I cant even count anymore.

why would you pay extra for something your insurance provides for free?

Do you have glass coverage on your policy? You might want to call your insurance company and see what their take is on it. Before that crack gets any bigger, you may be able to get it fixed by one of those stone chip/crack repair companies. There typically is no deductible and they will bill your insurance company directly. No out of pocket expense to you. It's important to fix these quickly before they spread and the whole windshield needs to be replaced.

In other words, fixing it now may cost you nothing. In addition, they may come to the car to fix it. I obviously don't know what your itinerary is.

You are aware that your own insurance company provides you with a little thing called insurance?...That you are already paying for.

You are aware that filing claims and covering that $500 or $1000 out of pocket deductable could lead to higher premiums or outright cancelletion for you? And you will be pay for that for a long time. Id rather pay a couple of cheesy little dollars up front for the waiver and be done with it right there.
