I got a slight question concerning the bootloader. A few days ago I remove the hdd with vista installation in it and put it in my parent pc, of course, I formatted it and put in xp. And my main questiuon is, after I did that, whenever I boot up my computer, the menu pop up and ask me if I want to use xp or vista. Now that Vista is gone and I don't plan to install it again soon, how do I get rip of the bootloader menu?

MOD EDIT: Moved to Operating Systems.

A format should have removed the Vista boot loader, shouldn't it? Anyway, boot off the XP install CD and choose the Recovery Console option. From the console execute the FIXBOOT command. You might need FIXMBR too, but I don't think so.

Btw, mods... this post ---> Operating Systems forum :).

Right click "My Computer," Select "Properties. Click the "Advanced tab," then click on the "Startup and Recovery" button. Choose the option you want to boot, remove the check mark to display a list of operating systems.

The fixboot command would have no impact on this issue.

Yeah, that will work if it's the XP loader that thinks Vista is still on the disk. If it's the Vista loader then this won't work, as far as I know, since XP can't edit the Vista BCD.

It will work in this case, since the menu she sees is from the boot.ini file, and xp would over write any bootloader that was already there during installation.

I would think so too, but then why is Vista showing up at all? No trace of it should have survived a format, so on install XP should not have seen any other OS to add to the menu. I'm going to guess that Vista was on a diff. partition that was not reformatted.

I'm having the same issue and I can't find any way to get Vista off the damn boot loader menu... as far as I know I've done everything.
manually checked boot.ini and verified that
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN /FASTDETECT C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdcons
was the only thing in it. Also booted to recovery console, which is odd, it sees my xp install on E:\ rather than c:\ which isn't that much of an issue. I have ran fixmbr, fixboot, deleted and attempted all previous commands and nothing, vista is still there... Now I have 1 more step to go through after the initial choose your OS screen I have ANOTHER that give me the option of xp or recovery console again! I completely formated the drive that vista was installed on to install Server 2003, but I can't... for some reason it wont boot to finish the install if it detects that Vista install or whatever it is. Also, did a dir bcdedit.* /s /a h r on each drive, which if I remember my dos correctly, it should search the directory and all subdirectorys for bcdedit(apparently Vista's boot.ini equivilant) and comes up with nothing on all 3 drives. I really don't want to go through EVERY directory and search for this damn boot loader for an OS that refused EVERY hardware change I've done(changed videocard BOSD on boot, same with HDD, DVD-ROM)

"Uninstall

After playing around with Vista for a few days, you may want to remove it from your system, and reclaim the hard drive space. Microsoft has made this step very simple as well.

1.Boot your computer in to Windows XP.
2.Ensure you have the Vista DVD image emulated or in the DVD drive.
3.Go to ?Start? and ?Run?. Type in ?e:\boot\bootsect.exe /nt52 ALL /force? (without quotes, and replacing e: with the drive letter of your Vista DVD).
4.Restart the computer, and you will notice the boot selection menu is gone.
5.Format the partition/drive where you had Vista installed.
6.Remove two files (Boot.BAK & Bootsect.BAK) on your XP drive?s root folder (C: ), these were backup files of your previous bootloader, now no longer useful.
7.Optional: Restart to ensure it still works.
8.Use your partition software to merge your partitions together.

And now you have returned your computer to its previous state, without Vista and without the new bootloader. If anyone has any issues, please post it in comments and I?ll try to resolve it."

If your Vista was 64 bit, you won't be able to use it from the 32-bit XP. Just google for the appropriate 32-bit file. I did, when I uninstalled the RC1 in December 2006.

Good luck!
