Window air conditioners? btus?

i just moved into an apartment without central air and i am trying to figure out window a/c units.

are 2 5000btu units going to produce the same amount of cooling as one 10,000?

from what little i have found a 10,000btu unit is rated at being able to cool 400-450 ft, but a 5000btu unit is only rated to cool 100-150 (these are based on what is written on the package). does anyone know if those numbers are accurate, and why 2x more btu in a single unit offers 3x cooling efficiency.

I don't know for sure, but it's probably got something to do with the larger (10k btu) unit being able to move more air than the smaller unit.
