Window 98 usage

Hi everyone.
I just have a simple technical question. What do you guys recommend I do to speed up my computer performance under Windows 98? Would I see more of a difference if I do a fresh installation of Windows or upgrading my computer to 128 megs of ram from 64 megs? My cpu is Pentium II 400. I don't do much with my computer except simple window application: such as Words, Excel, Winamp, surfing the Web...etc. It's been a while since I had a fresh installation, so all kind of junk has been accumulated in my computer. Thanks. I appreciate any help I could get.

Yes, upgrading your RAM would give you a very significant and notable performance increase. And with the LOW prices of RAM today I don't see why that wouldn't be the starting place for an upgrade, especially since you say you only use standard applications. I'd also recommend reinstalling if you haven't in awhile. There's nothing like the feeling of fresh Windows.

Also you may want to consider upgrading to Windows 2000.

defragging your hdd may yield some speed benefits if you haven't done it for awhile.
try taking out unecessary startup stuff in msconfig as well!

I would recommend you use a perminate swap file (eg 100min-100max) That
will increase your overall sysem preformance and also add this lnie
to you autoexec.bat file to speed up disk cache c:\windows\smartdrv.exe 🙂

the same advice: get 256 mb of ram and add the line ConservativeSwapFileUsage = 1 under the 386Enh section in your system.ini. i usually let windows manage my swapfile size though.
