Window 8.1 - unable to do window updates?

You should have an error code when an update fails to install. You can dig some out of the update history by double-clicking on each update entry.

With the code it's usually reasonably easy to find out the cause/solution.

Hey guys, I just bought a new netbook that come with Windows 8.1 and I'm unable to install windows update for it?

Thanks

You getting the big red x or it seems like the update is hanging?

I occasionally have this happen. Everytime its happened, its because I tried to initiate the update. The work around was to let Windows do it by itself. Set the update window, do a reboot and just wait it out.

Make sure that windows is actually activated otherwise it won't receive any updates.

This is simply incorrect.

When installing Windows on customers' computers, the absolute last thing I would do with them was to activate Windows.

OS install first (obviously), then either service pack(s) or drivers (depending on the circumstances), then Windows updates, then my applications install script, then deliver the computer to the customer, set up printers etc, then activate Windows.

Of course Win8x activates automatically these days (I'm sure there's a way to disable that behaviour but for now I'm going with the flow), but hey ho.

BTW guys, the OP has returned to the forums since posting this thread but hasn't responded here.
