How difficult is it to hook up a Windows 7 laptop to an iPhone to download and upload pics? I have a Samsung GSIII and all I have to do is to connect it to the laptop using a USB cord. In fact setting up new folders in the Samsung can be accomplished using Windows Explorer. I couldn't figure out how to do it using the Andriod software, without asking someone. (And I never did.) But I might be in the market for an iPhone 6, and I am wondering if transferring the files will be this easy or much harder.

Second what about music files... mp3, mp4, wma?

It looks like iOS supports mtp transfers (not quite direct disc access like a USB drive, but instead explorer passes along file request to the iOS and it becomes the middle man. This helps prevent file corruption from incomplete transfers, bad transfer data. ) so you can use a direct usb connection. iOS also supports several file clouds, and of course there is always itunes.

There are 3rd party programs that allow you to use the iPhone like a regular device for copying files back and forth. I know there are(were) a few that integrated with explorer so it was totally seamless. I use iExplorer, yeah it's another program you have to install. But I love how it makes it so simple. With the explorer integrated ones I still had to poke around to find directories. With iExplorer it's a lot quicker to find anything.

You don't even need a third party app for pictures. Windows detects it as a camera. You can then drag and drop pictures just like you would with any other digital camera. Very straight forward.

For music though, you have to go through iTunes.

I have small library of music that I ripped from CDs that I own. So you are saying that I have to rebuy the music I own through itunes to get it on an iphone? Wasn't it Jobs who encouraged us to rip audio music? Okay the latter is not a technical question. Just rhetorical.

No, but you would need itunes to import your local music files. Reason #1 why I hate apple devices.

No, of course not. iTunes works like any other media player. You import your existing music files into it, then you can load them onto your iDevice. It also has a built in CD ripper. Of course iOS's default music player is limited to common formats, so you'll need a third party app if your rips are all FLAC or OGG files.

Windows treats the iphone like a camera, so just use the default windows photo transfer application to move pictures.

To get music on the phone you need to add all your music to an itunes library and sync your phone to that. It feels like a chore at first, but it gets easier once you learn how to use it. You can set itunes to only add exactly the songs you select, so you're essentially getting the same functionality that you'd get by dragging and dropping music files onto an android device. Later you can figure out smart playlists and you might actually start liking itunes better.
