Windoes XP Install Error! $25.00 reward

I will pay whoever helps me w/ a solution $25.00.

I build a new computer. When installing Windows XP 2nd Edition I get a pop up asking for file i386.dll on the Windows XP Disc 2.

There is only 1 disc that came w/ my purchase of Windows! Anyone have any clue how to fix this problem? If I cancel the request and finish the Windows XP install it looks like an older version of Windows. For example, Internet Exporer is missing, calucator, etc.

Any ideas?

First of all, what is WinXP 2nd Edition?? 😵
The only XP versions I know of are XP Home SP! and SP2 or XP Pro SP1 or SP2 and XP Pro 64.

Did you buy Upgrade or OEM version?

***EDIT-
Does it give you the same error every time you try to reinstall? If you do and it's an authentic normal XP hologram install disc, I would suggest that it is defective somehow and should be returned along with the COA that came with it.

I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM!!! I KNOW THE ANSWER!!!!!

Turn off the computer. Turn it on. Restart installation. It will work this time.

Wheres my $25?

You bought this XP 2nd Edition from a store?

Is it XP Home, XP Pro or XP Media Center Edition?

You should have a hologram CD saying the version of Windows on it.

Win XP 2nd edition? 😛 Since it's a new system it might not be stable. Download memtest86+ to a floppy or make a bootable cd, then try to complete 5 passes. If you get errors then check/adjust your memory timings.

If you have more than one stick of RAM, try it with only one stick at a time. Might be a bad stick of RAM.

I would guess this is a failed slipstreamed disk to SP2

either use the original, and install SP2 offline (download net install) or rebuild your SP2 slipstreamed disk. Disk 2 is the "SP2" CD.

He said that he's using the "original" that came with his pc. He doesn't mention Media Center so it's one cd.

I just had the same exact error after installing Window XP Media Center Edition w/ rollup 2. This was my first ever build and everything was going great until I ran into this problem. In my situation, halfway during the install a window asked for the "Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 Disk". This Media Center was supposed to have SP2 already on it, so I tried the both install disks, that didn't work, I download and created an SP2 disk, that didn't work, so I cancelled the window and XP installed and I thought everything was alright, untill I tried installing the drivers and it went to crap, Kernel and Windows Installer errors everywhere. So I just reinstalled Windows by booting the PC with the install disk1 and I allowed it do a complete reinstall, wiping out everything on the PC (nothing was really on there anyway), this time though, I never got the window asking for the SP2 disk and now everything runs great.

As Taz480 said, It is probably a bad stick of RAM. Almost every time this happens to me, it is a bad stick. Try using only 1 stick.
