If a new system is being built primarily for gaming, will a Venice still be a better choice? Will there be a noticeable difference?

im waiting myself. Assuming you WILL be overclocking because youre in this forum to begin with, I am debating 3200 winnie/3200 venice. So far 1 big plus for sure according to all these nerds in here is Venice I guess CAN support all 4 of your dimms being double sided. Also there is appaerntly WAy more headroom for overclocking because they run at lower voltage/heat..etc. But then again I am new to this.. I have a whopping 17 posts! But I read everyforum on the planet all day at work.

If you keep the chips at stock (don't overclock), then they will perform almost identically (Venice might have 0.5 more FPS). If you wish to overclock, then a Venice is a much better idea than Winchester.

If you're building it why don't you just overclock it for him ... ;) ... give him more bang for his buck.

Currently few if any apps use SSE3 instructions, and gaming wise you will notice no difference at stock speeds.

so I will only notice a difference in overclocking? is this just assumed? or is there proof it beats the winchester in overclocking? also what a bout heat/power consumption? they are the same in that regard right?

No a Venice consumes a bit less than a Winchester but i don't think that's a big adventage(beside the facts that they overclock better because of this power/heat advantage).

hrmm.. so I'm really seeing no reason to spend 40 dollars more on an oem venice compared to a retail winchester. bah, stumped.

There is no real proof in overclocking. There are statistics. At this point it looks as if the average Venice bought today will overclock higher than the average Winchester bought today. But there are likely statistical outliers on both cores, and probably cases where a good Winchester will outdo a lousy Venice.

The Venice is very new, and there isn't enough data IMO to state with confidence that you are guaranteed better with a Venice than a Winchester.
