Winchester A64 3500+

I'm asking WRT overclocking with DFI Ultra-D board. I'm about to purchase one and price is good. ($160~$165)
The seller says the core is Winchester. What do you think? Is it worth the price? How high would it go?

Just make sure it is not an CBBID winchester. Also, if you are going to overclock, I would go for a Venice core.

The Winchester CPU cores tend to top off at around 2.6GHz. Some are able to coax them up toward 2.7GHz and some can't get past 2.5. YMMV but 2.6GHz is not unreasonable with the Winchester core. The 3500+ Venice is $201 at Newegg right now so I'd say you're getting a deal for the Winchester at $165.

Thanks for the responses.. But erm... 2.6GHz.. seems a bit disappointing. I was hoping to ~2.8. Venice is better, so I guess?

Hey, nothing wrong with CBBID's! I got my 3000+ to 2.6 on 1.6 vcore, stock cooling. Probably could get 2.7 or more out of it, since temps were only 54C in summer.

There is no way a Winchester will do 2.8GHz stable on air cooling. You'll have a better chance at reaching 2.7GHz with the Venice core. Keep in mind that only a low percentage of overclockers are able to get the Venice to 2.8GHz stable so there's a chance you can hit it, but it's not gauranteed.

If you can find the 146 Opteron for $165 then great. The lowest price I see it selling for right now is $199.00. That's from the AT Real Time Pricing Engine
