OK, I've been starting a lot of threads lately because I'm going to be buying a new computer soon but I believe this will be my last question. :)

I'm planning on getting the Winchester 3200+ with a Thermaltake Silent Boost K8 and Shin Etsu G675 Thermal Grease. Monarch computer will be building my barebones system for me for $18 and will be giving me HL2 and Far Cry free (yay!). How does the thermal grease compare to Arctic Silver 5? Also, will the Tt Silent Boost K8 suffice for around a 200-400MHz overclock (I want to play it safe)? Will temperatures remain under 50C? Do you think I will have to raise the vcore?

here is what MY results are.
I have a 3000+ winnie. week 44. I am using the default a64 hsf and can overclock to 2400mhz without raising vcore. at that speed, i max out at 55C. you do NOT need to buy a hsf. spend the extra 50$ upgrading another part of your computer.
people that buy into the hype that they 'need' a new hsf are stupid. a64s just are not hot.. end of story

^---- Ya well people want a quiet hsf....not like the loud stock hsf and its only $19 for the silent boost.

well yes that makes sense. that 'should' be the only reason to get like a zalman. but the stock hsf isnt really loud anyway..

Actually, it would be cheaper to buy the Tt. The retail package for the 3200+ costs $217. The OEM costs $179. So that's like paying $38 for the retail HSF. It would be cheaper to buy the Tt. And does it cool the CPU better to some extent that the stock? Even if it's only 1-2C.

your warranty is also voided if you use another heatsink... get your facts straight.
At least if you use the stock heatsink, tehre is no way to know that you overlocked

OK, now Monarch gives me the option to add Shin-Etsu G675 thermal grease. Will adding that void my warranty, even if I use the stock HSF - they say it won't? Does it work better than the stock and how does it compare to Arctic Silver 5?

I believe that once you use anything other thermal compound besides the wax stuff that comes with stock heatsink, the warranty is voided. But if anything happens with the chip just clean it well before you rma it. And your much better off buying some artic silver 5 or ceramique and applying yourself, it performs better and youll save 6 bucks.

OK, so I just release the clips holding the stock HSF in place, lift up the HSF, clean whatever is on the CPU and HSF with some alcohol (96-97% rubbing alcohol), using the AS5 tube and put a dot the size of a capital "O" in a magazine on the center of the CPU, then place the CPU back in the Socket, then press the HSF on the CPU which will evenly distribute the AS5? That's all? Correct any details if I'm wrong please. Thanks.

REEEEAAAD... I'm going to be buying the system in the next week or so... What's in my sig is what I'm planning on buying. But I won't change the HSF, just put AS5, so can you please read if what I wrote above is correct?

well part of what you said implies that you would start by first remvoing the hsf from your chip. if you are going to buy this computer, why would put the hsf on first with the provided thermal compound?
anyway, yes, put a small dab of as5 in the centre of the cpu and attach the hsf.

wait a sec.. your sig gives overclock results.. i do not understand what you are doing

Monarchcomputer.com is installing the retail HSF for me. I just want to clean off the crapphy thermal compound they give me and replace it with AS5.

Also, my sig is what I play to build. Sorry for the confusion. I plan to get that OC, and judging by what everyone is telling me, it should reach that easily.

So to sum everything up, a Winchester 3200+ with Arctic Silver 5 and the the stock HSF should easily be able to hit 2.4GHz and still remain at or under 50C, correct?

Nothing with the word "thermaltake" on it is quiet.

with stock HSF you don't have to wait money on thermal past.

yes, as long as your computer is well cooled, even if your using the stock thermal grease.

another thing to think about: im on stock cooling w/ AS5, and with my mobo (in sig) there is an option to ajust the fan speed automaticly to keep the processor at a cirtian temp. the options range from like 65C to 40C. i set mine at 50C, and..presto, i dont need a new cooler. obvioiusly, this wont keep your system whisper quiet because it spins up the fan, but my system sounds like a jetplane anyway so it dosnt matter to me.

I got to 2.475GHz on my 3000+ using stock cooling and AS5 without bumping the Vcore. Now I'm at 2.5GHz (1.425V) and it's still running pretty cool. You'll be fine on stock, unless you want silence, in which case I'd look at Zalman's 7000-AlCu or 7700-AlCu.
