Winchester 3000+

Hi guys,

Here is my dilemma. I got a Winchester 64 3000+ on a Gigabyte K8NS Ultra 939 which I was trying to OC a bit. I am not looking for huge gains but if I could make a 3500+ or equivalent out of it, I would be happy. Here is some info you should know:

1.CPU = Winchester 3000+ (stock H/F)
2.Memory = 512 OCZ 3200 (Premier) CAS3, 512 Kingston 3200 (Value) CAS3
3.Mobo = Gigabyte K8NS Ultra 939
4.BIOS = pretty new (not latest)

Anyhow, I have downclocked the CPU to get an idea how fast I can OC my RAM, I got it to 240 with additional voltage but W2K was locking. I think the best results are around 220-230Mhz. I am sure that this being ?value? RAM, I will not be able to get it to go faster (or would I?). My AGP is at 66Mhz (not auto) which I am hoping makes is locked.

Here are some questions:
1.Does the Gigabyte K8NS Ultra 939 have an HTT setting and would it help in any way?

2.How much juice can you sqeeze out of ?value? ram. Would extra 40Mhz or so be tops?

3.Would the latest BIOS make any difference? From what I know the newest BIOS for this mobo will do nothing to help me.

4.Are there any additional settings on this mobo that I have missed but could help?

5.Any other tricks that I can use which I am missing?

If anyone with this mobo could shed some light on this and help a fellow Gigabyter I would appreciate it!

dont have the mobo, but one thing i have to say. you should use memtest to test your ram. windows running smoothly is not a garauntee that the memory is ok.

I'm not an expert with Gigabyte (honnestly I hate them :) ) so I cannot help you myself on the subject.. But...I have some links for you :D :
Your mobo
Your CPU

For your ram why don't you use a lower setting? I use a 5/6 div for exemple on my value ram so my OC 3200+ running at 2.4Ghz don't OC the ram...it still runs at 200mhz.

No luck getting any decent OC on this mobo. I have tried the F2, F5 and F9 BIOS upgrades and they simply don't give you all the settings you need. Yes you do get voltage control of AGP, CPU, MEM, etc but you can only OC the thing using HTT (FSB) and multiplier (which can't go above 9) alone.

Unless I really missed something big here, I am very dissapointed with this mobo. :(

Could just be a cpu that doesn't overclock well. Did you access the memory timings by hitting "control-F1" at the same time? Haven't used gigabyte in awhile, so those keys may not be correct.

No I did not. Do you press CTRL+F1 when you are in BIOS or just before you enter BIOS? There could be some additional options available, however the "bread and butter" is in BIOS and BIOS only allows you voltage adjustments and HTT (which is not really a TRUE HTT, but more like FSB) and miltiplier adjustments. My Asus mobo from the PIII days had these basics settings and I would expect much more tweaking options in 2005 and from Gigabyte. :(

I will try the CTRL+F1 tonight and post if it works.

Thanks!

I'm not quite sure to understand what you are missing?

Le Québécois: I needed the HTT multiplier to stay as close to 1000 HT as possible.

O1die: thanks for the CTRL+F1... you made my day! It worked! When you press that in BIOS you get the "Advance Chipset Setup" or something similar like that. In there you can adjust not only mem settings manually (say taking down DDR400 to 166Mhz setting) but also you can manually adjust its timings AND, most importantly, the HT multiplier.

Anyhow, I am happy to report that with my value ram and AMD stock air cooling, I was able to reach 2434 Mhz or 9x270Mhz (mem speed of 221Mhz) @ 1.475V (got some stability testing to do still).

I guess I got my 3800+ after all!!! :D (35% OC ;))

For those of you who want more in depth info let me know and I'll post it here.

I hate it when some settings controls are "hidden" in the Bios.

I suggest you don't push you're value ram too far...Like it was explain in the latest on OverClocking on Anandtech speed isn't anything if you don't have the video card for it in games...would be a shame to fry your ram for nothing. Since its value ram I doubt you have anykind of temp sensor on it.

Any way..like stated on the previous article...you don't get much gain from value to high quality ram on a AMD 64.
