The monkey audio installer should have a winamp plugin to play the .ape files. I'm playing some now in Winamp5 Beta1.

I have a question: Why does everyone hate Winamp3? I've been using it since it came out and haven't had a single problem.

A lot of people seemed to think it was slow and "bloated." In other words, a couple of people said it sucks and then everyone else decided to go along with the group. It plays music just fine, that's why I use it.

Note: I'm not saying some people don't have legitimate gripes with Winamp 3, just that most don't. Also I realize many people don't use Winamp 3 because 2 works just as well and they never bothered installing 3.

Question: When I try to scroll in the playlist with my scrollwheel, it changes the volume... can I fix that somehow?

And I'm getting gaps in ogg...

I've found that most people (including myself) preferred the minimalness of winamp 2.

Start winamp 3. Hit play. Pretty minimal for me....Don't get me wrong, I can understand what you're saying, I'm just making the point that much of the bad rap Winamp 3 gets is unfounded.

While I agree that Winamp3 wasn't a horrible piece of software, it DID slow down my system. I found myself having trouble running multiple applications with Winamp3, as the music, and my other programs, would become choppy. So I switched back to Winamp 2 'cause it didn't slow me down.

So far, I'm happy to report no problems with Winamp5.

I felt like winamp 3 was a step down from winamp 2. That's all. It's by no means "bad"... but... I just felt like winamp 2 was better.

So what's better? Winamp5 or iTunes?

Do you mean Winamp3 or 5 Beta?

If you mean 5, it depends on your needs. Winamp5 is faster, takes up less space and is more compact on the screen, but iTunes has faster ripping (though Winamp's will be just as fast in the Pro version), slightly better sound, and of course you can download music from them.

iTunes has better sound?

It has a "sound enhancement" feature that alot of people like, though I compensate with Winamp5 by using the MAD audio encoder plugin, which had better clarity than the default decoder IMO.

Here is what I found so far that is a bug or I just plain find annoying.

1) Even if I turn it off it'll crossfade between tracks when I run it again.
2) The playlist no longer shrinks to 1 line.
3) No option to autoplay the list when winamp starts.

IMHO, the "sound enhancement" only works if you have crappy speakers. It sounds really weird on good speakers, and downright ghastly on quality headphones. That's just my experience though, and it could be my Audigy's fault for all I know.

Winamp2/5 + Shibatch + ASIO works for me.

i gotta admit that it's pretty slick. a year now that i've ditched winamp in favor of foobar. foobar does what it needs to do and the development is going fast.

winamp is gonna have competition sooon ..

iTunes
wmp9
MMJB
couple of other obscure ones that have niche market.

go Foobar!

My iTouch controls are only working with Winamp 5, 2 and 3 didn't like the buttons.

Weird, my iTouch buttons always worked with winamp 2. It used to work also with WMP, but somehow it stopped. Oh well, I like it better this way.
