Winamp3's random song feature sukx0rs

I have roughly songs on my playlist right now, and whenever I hit the button to go to the next song, and I have it set to pick songs at random, it seems to go through the same 40 songs or so over and over, with very little variation.

I went into preferences and changed the percentage of variance allowed when picking random songs on the playlist, but didn't really help at all.

I recently went back to a version of Winamp before version 3 was released and I'm listening to songs I had completely forgotten were even on this playlist!

Whatever Nullsoft did needs to be reverted back to the original way for selecting the songs.

Anyone know any tricks for getting the random feature to work better, or am I the only one who has noticed this and had a problem with it?

Ah well, when you know a way to let this version 2.81 to use LyricAmp, and not have over half my songs listed as Unkown Artist - Untitled... none of which were listed that way in Winamp3 :(

Maybe I should just search for another player, its probably a waste of time though because Winamp its pretty much universally accepted as the best mp3 player.

IIRC Nullsoft has a version of winamp coming out soon that will be a combination of good features from winamp 3 and winamp 2.8x.

wouldn't that be 2.9, which is already out?

Do you know if LyricsAmp works for that? I love reading my lyrics :D

I saw on their forums that they were thinking of calling it Winamp 5. 2 + 3 = 5 haha. Not funny. And you are correct, soon is not soon enough!

To answer my own question: LyricsAmp wouldn't even let me install in a non-Winamp3 directory :(

Don't know what I'm gonna do...

Anyone know of another plug-in for lyrics that works as well as Lyricsamp that works with Winamp pre 3.0?

It sounds like a simple bug: something faulty with the way it picks random numbers. Why don't you submit a bug? Then at least you'll be helping something, and it should get fixed by the next release.

Ok well I've had the new 2.9 version for awhile now, and let me just say its random song feature isn't screwed but the rest of it sucks compared to 3.0 imo.

Not to mention every once in awhile the music starts turning crackly until I close winamp and open it again. Never had problems like that with any other version of winamp.

Here's a fix for the randomizing problem: randomize the list, then listen to it with shuffle turned off. That way you are guaranteed to hear all of the songs and they're still in "random" order.

That's what I do. That way you can see what's coming next too. I don't listen to random because I want to be surprised, I just listen to it so I don't hear my songs in track order or artist order. With the list shuffle I can make some modifications along the way. Only problem with that mode is that if there's a song you WANT to listen to it's hard to find (in that list anyway) but that's usually not an issue. I can just find it in my files folder and drag/drop or resort the list. (The problem with resorting the list is that the next time you shuffle it's not the same as last time SO you may end up listening to a few songs you just listened to again).

ARGH. :D

exactly. 3.0 sucks. go back to 2.8:gift:

2.8 and 2.9 can't minimize down to the system tray like 3.0 can :( Since I almost always have my mp3s going, one less thing on the task bar is pretty damn nice.

Also lyricsamp doesn't work except for 3.0... damn it now I'm torn.

In version 3.0 go into the preferences and set the Playlist shuffle to 100% . It defaults to 30%

Though it's still not as random as I'd like.

actually, they can minimize to system tray. go to options -> display and you can choose to put it in system tray

You can minimize to the tray on Winamp 2.x. It's in the Options-->Display section. System Tray Only.

WTH how did I never notice that before, but I used it all the time in Winamp3.
