Winamp sound quality is horrible... What's the BEST mp3 player?

When I first heard that winamp has sub-par sound quality out there for mp3 software players I first dismissed it thinking that it was a bunch of crock... I used winamp for the longest time and I guess I just never bothered looking into other players. Well after being told that windows mediaplayer 7 is even better, I decided to test it out, and guess what, the difference is INCREDIBLE! Try it out yourself, I'm sure you will find the results surprising. I know sound quality is a matter of opinion, but I don't think anyone could prefer winamp over mediaplayer. Winamp in comparison is just simply dull. I'm not so sure but I believe there are players out there even BETTER than mediaplayer, can anyone confirm this? No one likes the mediaplayer interface so I'm sure there are players out there that will compromise quality with program features. So is there anything better than mediaplayer in terms of quality? I hear there are plugins for winamp that improve quality, but not your mainstream plug-ins like wow-thing or the stuff you will find on winamps website... does anyone know of any such "rare" plug-ins? Everyone list your favorite players, I'm sure this would be beneficial for everyone!

Sonique sound a lot better than Winamp too, but uses more CPU. WMP7.0 sounds REALLY good, but use A LOT of the CPU, while listening to MP3 with WMP, moving back and forward in IE takes 3 seconds longer.

I have never played an MP3 in WMP7.0 but this is amazing. It is so beautiful it makes me want to cry. See ya in hell, Winamp! Theres one problem though. It is EATING my K6-2 350Mhz for BREAKFAST!

Interesting, I've used Winamp forever. I'll give WMP7 and Sonique a shot. I've used both and disliked them, but never payed attention to the sound quality... Let's see...

Using Sonique... Sounds just like Winamp, but it looks bigger and uglier.

wmp7 has the wow plugin built in. You can download the plugin for winamp as well.

I just tried myself, what type of music are you guys hearing differences in and in what way? Sounds the same to me between Winamp 2.6 and WMP7.

More importantly, what speakers are you using. Simulated surround plugins like wow-thing have much less of an effect on better speakers. On good speakers wow-thing will just make the music sound metallic.

I use the wowthing plug in with winamp and WMP7.0 is still better. My only qualm so far is the CPU usage and the lack of options for playing. For example, I can't figure out how to make it play just one song and stop rather than going on and playing the next song on my list, which bring me to my next point. My song list, it seems I can make it display all of the audio on my computer or display one artist, CD, or genre at a time, but not by location (i.e. folder, drive, etc.). Is there a way to make it only list the songs in my /MP3 folder like Winamp does?

Even WITHOUT wowthing I think wmp7 beats out winamp. I have the cambridge DTT2500, and wowthing sounds simply AMAZING on some songs, and other's sound can be a bit overemphasized, rock usually. Like I said, songs are so DULL w/ winamp. Yea I suppose speakers could be a factor, but for me wmp7 wins hands down

I personnally like Apollo for sound quality. It has a basic Win32 looking GUI. Yeah it's boring, but the sound quality is much better than Winamp.
Unfortunately he stopped making it, and there is no longer a website.
Fortuantely I have it on a CD. Hehehehe.

You've probably never heard of it, it was banned in the states because the splash screen had a nipple on it. He changed it eventually....but it did't get much recognition because of that.

Anyhow..as for winamp check your version/output plugin. There are some versions that use Nitrane, and some that user Fronderhauf (sp?). One sounds like crap, one sounds really good. I can't remember which is which though.

Wowthing kinda suck, it just exaggerated the volume and bass, not much in quality.
but it does wonder for those el cheapo comes-with-oem speakers.
My roomate's Altec Lansing (9XX something) 2 set speaker can literally shakes the table with a bulky monitor on top of it, the sound quality goes up too.

and if wowthing was amazing with Dtt2550, that tells a lot about it :)

hmmm guess my sb16 / cheap 120w amplified speakers aren't good enough quality, I can't notice a diff from Winamp to Sonique to WMP7, all latest versions. I listened to 160, 192, 256 and 320kbps mp3s, they all sounded equally good in Winamp.

Oh well. Using WMP right now... It runs SO MUCH NICER under Win2K than it did under WinME a while back. In fact I can't even get WinME installed now, LOL... Don't ask me! Oh well. Doesn't want to 'upgrade', it wants to be the only OS... LOL...

I couldn't even hear a difference. I went ahead and installed the correct version of Nitrane just because, but I still couldn't tell. I must be deaf. ;)

2.22 uses fronwhatever decoder 2.23/4 they went back to nitrane because they added mmx support and 3dnow to it, but it still has worse sound qulaity so I didn't like that move

I actually have that wowthing that costs $30 only use it as a little mini-amp type thing to plug my phones in at night. Just use bypass on it cause that plugin doen'st improve sound quality! I used to like it and then turned it off and was like, damn this sounds better. Compare non-wowthing then turn wowthing on and turn the volume down a little and compare the two. When you turn wowthing on the music is louder, and louder music sounds better in comparisions. wow thing just over exagerates some bass and stuff.

i'm not sure how good that WOW thing is, but the DFX plugin for winamp is INCREDIBLE, what a difference...it takes 15%cpu of my celeron 495 tho, as opposed to 1% without it.

You can get the Fraunhofer decoder for Winamp here. Just rename your current in_mp3.dll to something else, like in_mp3.nit. Unzip the Fraunhofer in_mp3.dll into your plugins directory and load up Winamp.

Umm I don't know about you guys but I loaded up MP7 and Winamp 2.64 and I couldn't tell the difference at all. In fact, do you guys use the equalizer in Winamp? I set it to my personal preference and I get sound I really like. The first time I fiddled with my equalizer and set it the way my car deck is setup, I was like *wow*. Winamp's default EQ is flat, and I think MP7 has a preset EQ... (that's not good).

Fiddle with the presets first, try what you like and you can customize it even further... I don't believe MP7 has EQ controls at all.
