Winamp Classic streaming internet audio stops sometimes

I'm listening to (and recording) streaming audio off an MP3 broadcast (it's WKCR's 7 day, 24/7 Ornette Coleman tribute going until sometime Wednesday), and a couple of times I've come back to the computer and had to click Play in Winamp to restart playing the stream. Why would it do this? I have my recording software set up to make 6 hour recordings, but I can't imagine that the recordings stopping/starting would affect Winamp. I suppose it could be a glitch in the stream, or the radio station's stream being interrupted due to excessive draw on their server or whatever. Would Winamp stop if the stream is interrupted?

It could. You could test it on other streams. Set everything up as you normally do, start recording, then briefly block the stream, and see what happens.

Uh, what would "briefly block the stream" in such a way as to simulate a stream interruption? Stopping the stream would obviously stop Winamp's recording. I suppose there might be no workaround for this other than my checking on Winamp once in a while. I have things set up so that the stream is going to my stereo, so I can turn it on at any time to see of the program's happening in my systems. It's not horrible if I miss some of this stuff, obviously, but I was hoping to catch it all, at least as of yesterday, when I started the recordings.

Pull the ethernet cord, firewall the ip address.
There's a switch on this laptop that turns off wireless connectivity. I guess I could toggle that off, then back on after X amount of time. A minute or two ago the broadcast was interrupted by ~15 seconds of silence. It could have been an error in the station's studio, but more likely the stream was interrupted for whatever reason. My recording and Winamp didn't terminate, there will just be a few seconds of silence. Perhaps Winamp automatically would have stopped if the interruption had been somewhat longer. I assume so...

I think I'll just leave my stereo on for the time being. Ornette 24/7!

Good stuff. I have a few of his albums from back when I had an Emusic subscription(before they courted the big players, and reduced the service features while raising the price.)

It's really rocking right now. Some of the stuff they're playing isn't so hot, right now it's raging! o_O I think a guy's coming on who's going to talk alot about Coleman, he knew him personally. He was on yesterday, is knowledgable and well spoken, eloquent, actually. Show be on in 10 minutes, I think. His name is Schaff (SP?).

I did a search and came up with something:

a-quick-fix-for-internet-radio-stream-skippings

in part:

Right-click the main Winamp window as well and select Options > Preferences from the menu. Select Output > Plugins in the menu and click on configure after choosing a plugin from the list. The default plugin is Nullsoft Directsound Output.

Click on the Buffering tab in the new window and adjust the settings. The default values are 2000ms Buffer Lenght, 500ms for Prebuffer and on Buffer-Ahead. Max values are 20000ms which is a lot. I would start by adding 1000ms and testing that setting. Add another 1000ms if the music is still skipping
- - - -

I don't know if adjusting the buffering would help stop the occasional dropped streaming, but it's worth a try I figure...
