I have a Klipsch 5.1 setup and noticed that for mp3's played in winamp, it only comes out of 2 speakers.

any sound (mp3, movie, etc.) that comes out of media player plays out of all channels fine

What gives?

Stereo sound is supposed to be two speaker. Some sound cards allow you to clone and will send the sound to all 5 speakers.

What kind of sound card do you have?

It's an onboard Nvidia sound that clones it for everything else except when played through Winamp.

this is a Winamp thing, not a sound card thing

I have the 5.1 Ultra's and I use winamp, and sound comes out on all the speakers...(not sure about the center channel) - but I use an Audigy 2 ZS soundcard....

What version of winamp are you using?

If it's 2.x, make sure you are using the DirectSound output rather than the wav output or whatever it's called. The soundcard will clone it to the rear speakers only if it's going through DirectSound.

i think i'm on winamp 5 something using DirectSound.

I know this because I fiddled with the output plugins and couldn't get any of them to work.

This is very bizarre. Again, this ONLY happens with winamp. All other media players clone the sound to all 5 of my speakers.

Is the "allow hardware acceleration" button checked inside the DirectSound output plugin in Winamp?

If so, I'm out of ideas.

it wasn't, but i checked it and it made no difference

Come on, Winamp gurus, it HAS to be a winamp thing... I play the same mp3 out of WMP and it plays through all speakers.

Making me mental

This is my suggestion as well, since it fixed it for me. I'm not sure why it doesn't work for you. But I am using a 2.X version of WinAmp...

Weird. Uninstalled 5.05 and installed Winamp 2.95 and now it works.

What's up with that?

You're supposed to use 2 (or 2.1) speaker sound for music. This is what a soundstage is all about.
