Cool. I thought they would phase out the 2.* series with 3.* being released.

Good. WinAmp 3 is such a massive pile of suck, I ditched it after 15 minutes. Crap crap CRAP!!!

Looks like WinAmp is gonna do the same thing as that other AOHell acquisition, Netscape, and release an all-new product that doesn't work for sh*t (WA3=NS6) and then keep patching the old versions (WA2.x=NS4.x).

Lovely. How about just writing clean code THE FIRST TIME?!?

The first time I tried to install Winamp 3, it worked okay until I installed Moodlogic under it, after which it crashed even before loading up. I went back to Winamp 2.80, but a few days later I gave Winamp 3 another shot, and this time it worked perfectly.

It's true that Winamp 3 is a little slower to load, but a few revisions could fix that. Other that the slow load time, I cannot think of any other issues with version 3. And I really don't understand why people whine about the AOL icons when you have the option to deselect them during install.

DefRef, would you care to explain exactly what you hate about version 3 so much?

I for one very much like Winamp 3. The new Music Library feature is very handy. I like how you can get a list of all the albums in your collection or just the albums of a single artist. In a way it's even more convenient than Moodlogic because the album selection feature is not offered in the latter.

P.S. I really do not want to derail this thread, so please feel free to ignore my defense of Winamp3. ;)

Why WinAmp 3 is suck:

1. Skins - Ver. 2.xx skins do NOT all work with WA3. My fave, AudioLCARS, will not work.

2. Since I run my monitor at 1600x1200, I need to double-size WA. When I change skins, it resets to the standard size AND recenters in the screen, forcing me to double-size it, move it back into the corner, resize my playlist window, etc. Major PITA.

3. The default crossfade between songs is retarded. I thought there was something wrong when I tried to jump down my list.

4. Whenever I click on MP3 files or get streams from the Web, WinAmp 2.xx launches!! WA3 can't even set ITSELF as the default player! You don't see RealPlayer unable to do that - hell, it would grab JPEG and DOC file associations if it could!

I don't even know or care about whatever special features WA3 has because it has utterly failed in the BASIC tasks of playing back MP3s and using skins. The simple stuff that you use every second.

It's kinda like if the new Corvette could do 0-60 in 3.7 sec. and had giant sawblades (like the Mach 5), BUT you had to use an electrified, barbed wire steering wheel AND the seats were replaced with rusty metal poles you shoved up yer arse to drive. Yeah, the new features would be cool, but who cares when the important stuff is such a pain in the ass?!?

Well, it associated itself just fine on my system, and I never used skins, so for all I care they could remove skins altogether. I rarely see the interface anyways since I use an excellent keyboard control module that's available for WA3.

Here's what amuses me about winamp: I've been using winamp now for about 4 years, and in all that time, I don't think that the actual functionality that I've used has ever changed. Granted I don't ask my winamp to do a whole lot... I make playlists, play songs, use simple skins and sometimes open the equalizer. I think it's all been the same to me since I first downloaded it 4 years ago. One version even caused by computer to bluescreen, that was pretty cool.

So I guess I'm beginning to wonder why I keep getting new ones. ;) I'm sure 2.81 has some good new features and some important bug fixes--but I'm not sure I've ever really found a bug anyway.

I'll prolly get it anyway... but as for WA3, I don't see much of a point. I know the old one works, and to a casual user, I don't see much benefit.

OK, enough of me on my high horse already.

DefRef, you are absolutely right, the crossfader IS retarded. The fact that I can only set it in 1 second intervals is pretty annoying to begin with, and on top of that even when it is set to 1 second it still takes about 5 seconds when you skip a song.

Something else that annoys me is that Winamp3 does not save the location of the player window for the different display modes, so I have to move the player window around manually each time I switch from corneramp to full mode. This is a definite no-no.

But I still like it... :(

There are always bugfixes...

For those of you who don't like WinAmp or are annoyed with it, check out QCD. Very good player that I've used for years instead of WA.
