ok so i download this massively large .rar file...i use winace 2.2 for my compression/decompression purposes...the file opens and there is one folder and one file sitting in there, all about maybe 200 kb. MIND you this file was 230 megs. it just seemed like there was something wrong w/ opening it...so i dl-ed winrar 3.20 and voilla...the file opens correctly and all the files are there.

there seems to be definetly something wrong with winace handling .rar files. anyone else encounter this or know a fix?

depends on the versions you have.

i don't know off hand but from your posts, it sounds like your winace might be a bit dated and doesn't know how to handle the newer winrar file.

sid59,
i'm using the latest version of winace thats on their homepage...its 2.20

i dunno...i dont really like having two programs installed that essentially do the same thing...i especially like winace's GUI, but it looks like i might have to keep winrar installed in case i run into any more problems w/ rar files

WinAce probably came with an older version of unrar.dll. Compression programs are allowed to distribute unrar.dll to let them unrar things. This means that different compression software doesn't need to write algorthms to decompress rar files. If you copy the WinRAR unrar.dll over the one in the WinACE folder, it should work.

But there should be one in the systems folder.
