Can someone tell me if i have a computer Win9x running as "Windows Logon" and a computer Win2 running "Client for Microsoft Network" how do i allow the Win9x machine to browse the shared files on the Win2k PC?

If i set up an account for the Win9x PC on the Win2K PC with the Win9x PC's name i will get prompted for a password every time i try to browse the Win2k PC yeah?
If i enter the password that has been set up in the account will i then be able to browse the shared files?

I tried this a bit back, and every time i typed in the password kept getting "no permission" alert :(

Any help be appreciated,

rockhard =)

Install the client for microsoft networking on the 9x machine. Setup the desired username and password and permission levels on the Win2K machine. Then log on to the 9x machine, in the Client for Microsoft Networking dialog box, as the new username and password created and voila!!!

thanx outlamd

trouble is i get friends who have their pc's set up as Windows Logon and i dont want to change to Client as they will loose all their settings etc as it will in effect create a new user yeah? Im worried that if i change back to Windows Logon when done i wont be able to reinstate as before :(

is it possible to do this without changing to Client?

Whether, for the network, you use windows logon or network logon, user permissions should not change. If you can't access the network, the problem would not be with how you log on to it.

Your right in making up the account in win2k with the same name as used on the win9x box, but just make sure that you also use the SAME PASSWORD as is used on the 9x boxes account, and that you give the account the correct permissions in 2k to allow access to the files. Then when the person logs onto their 9x box with their username/pass they will also gain access to the 2k files without having to put in a password.

As for them using windows logon instead of client for microsoft networks, im not sure you even need to do this. My fiend has a 9x box networked with a 9x/2k box and they can both connect in 9x when one using the windows logon. When this same one is then booted into 2k it still connects to the one which uses the client for microsoft networks, but i havent tried it using the windows logon, so i dont know if its required or not. Im pretty sure you can use either, it should not matter.

If you do need to change to the client for microsoft networks, you dont need to make a new account or lose any settings, you just goto the network properties (right click on network neighbourhood and select properties, or use control panel ) and change the option to Client for microsoft networks instead of windows logon. Now all they have to do is put in their username and pass and they will get into the same account as they always have.

Hope this helps.
