win9x boot without video card

has anyone had experience booting winme or win9x without video card? the machine boots up fine, and i can access files over the network, but a program that was supposed to run at startup (winamp, HKLM\software\microsoft\windows\run) never starts. when i install a video card everything works just fine. any suggestions appreciated.

specs:

winme running on P5 166mhz
qdi p5i430vx motherboard
64mb ram
2.4gig hd
soundblaster awe 64
generic nic
matrox millenium II

hmmm never tried this before. I'm willing to be that the Explorer shell won't start without a video card installed so that's why your program never runs.

I know there is a way to make the CPU think a monitor is present when not but I never heard of anything like this before. Interesting though.

i don't think it's because of the explorer shell. i tried booting with winamp as shell, with no success. with the video card it works just fine.
