I will be getting a P4 1.6A, 512 RDRAM system soon. My question is, should I stick to Win98SE or upgrade to 2000 or XP? Is 98SE a bottleneck for the P4? Thanks.

Why do people even consider Win9X?
Are you some sort of Techno-masochist?

Because I already have a copy of Win98SE, so I'm just seeking suggestions/advice if I should spend some additional money on another OS.

I won't say that Win98SE is a bottleneck, but I would say that going with Win2K will allow you to get the most out of your system, considering the differences between how both OSes handle resources and other things.

Stability in Win2K is a big plus as well.

WIndows 2000 is a really good OS. Very good compatibility with all soft (like 98) and very very good good stability.

I havn't run Win9X in years, and won't ever again. If you don't mind putting up with it, it's your money. But I personally woudln't even give Win98 a first thought.

Dual boot. Win9x will always be on my system for max compatibility in games only . I use Win2k for everything else.

Nothingman, you must have had some bad luck with Win9x. I have no issues whatsoever with it, and still use it for gaming/internet usage.

Just my prefs.

If I had to pick 98se or win2k as the OS. I would pick win2k because I would want a more stable computer. But right now I'm running XP which is running stable on my laptop. Going to build my new desktop system in around a week and will be using XP. Since my old desktop system went up in smoke.

Not really, I used Win95b and Win98 for years when I first got a computer and it ran fairly well.

But since then I've gotten used to having a real OS on my box, i.e. Linux or NT, and the thought of going back to Win9x makes me ill. I also currently have a dual Athlon sytem with 1.2G memory, I doubt anyone would put win98 on that.
