Win98SE lost CDROM & CDRW drives

My brother's PC suddenly stopped recognizing his CDROM and CDRW drives. They show up in the BIOS, but not in Win98SE Explorer.

Without the CD's, I can't copy the CAB files to the Hard drive. Should I "remove" the IDE driver, and hope Windows rebuilds it?

That's one thing to try...you can also try a scanreg /restore in dos to restore the registry.......any idea what he did last? any software installed?

this sometimes helps, try switching the cables, even though it shows in the bios it can still be a cable problem

Is there any exclamation points in his device manager? Usually this is a problem with the hard disk controller in windows.
