Win98SE looking for a NIC that isn't installed

I'll try posting this here:

On my friend's Pent2 machine, Windows 98SE fails to boot. He recently uninstalled an old NIC (some Intel EtherExpress, not sure which one) and did remove it under device manager. It seems that Windows is trying to access the card or network upon startup. How can I remove network support from the computer in order to get it to boot? Right now, it will only boot in Safe Mode.

make sure that the problem is the nic card, is it possible to put it back in to check if thats the problem?

If that is the problem, then make sure to delete all references from the windows manager, you will see that there is something there left from the old install.
