Win98SE Full/Win2k upgrade - Dual Boot Settup, Is it possible?

I'm thinking about doing this, 2 10gig partitions, But my question is, will I be able to install the win2k upgrade to the second partition. or will I have to maybe set up both partitions, install win98 into the first one.. then copy win98 to the second partition(so win2k sees a 98 installation) and then upgrade.

Ideas?

Hmmmm, never tried that before. If you have a clean HDD, I'm guessing you could install Win98SE on the first partition, upgrade it, copy all of that to your second partition, and then install Win98SE on the first partition. I have a feeling that wouldn't work, though. The problem might arise right after you move everything over to your second partition, and that problem would be that it doesn't recognize Win2k.

You could try it, and then post your results here.

Install win98se on both partitions, and then just uupgrade one of them to Win2k?

Wouldnt that work?
I once installed a second copy of win98se on a separate partition(dont ask me how 🙂 ) and both showed up. SO this should work

Just an idea but when installing a 98 upgrade it will ask for the disk to verify you have a prior version. Wouldn't 2000 do the same thing?

not sure semperfi, im new to 2k.. I like it alot and would use it exclusively but it has some kind of problem with delta force land warrior, and I play that game alot. perhaps I should just try a new install. 🙁

If you have thw W2K disc and manual ,it explains how to set up a dual boot system,I believe. It does work. Lots of people do it and have great success. Using W2k for the more serious part of computing is great for file protection and OS security. The 98SE on a seperate partition just for gaming is a good idea.. I went a different route and have dual hdd drives in a removable harddrive bay. When I want to game or use my video cam,I just plug in the 98SE HDD. When I want to do other things,I use this W2K OS I'm on now.

My tastes in gaming will soon just be W2K compatible or I won't buy it. This OS rocks!

W2K rocks. I set up a dual boot by setting up two partitions like you did. I installed Windows 98SE on the first partition, although it should not matter if you install it on the first or second partition. I then installed W2K using the boot disks. When it asked where to install W2K, I just told it too install on the second partition (D:\Windows\). If you install 98SE on the second partition just tell W2K to install on the first partition (c:\windows). I had no problem with this setup.

Yes it is easy to setup I would suggest you boot from the 2000 cd and follow prompts. When you choose the partition select your D drive. It will give you the option to format select yes. and it will ask if you want ntfs or fat32. I would suggest fat32 since you are dual booting. I am triple booting 98/2000/mandrake7.2. 98/2000 was brainless, install both done. Anyhow when I booted 98 had a partition I couldn't access. It didn't take long to figure out that was a royal pain.

Eventually I am sure you will get a prompt to direct install to your prior version. You could try directing it to your c drive windows folder. If for some odd reason that doesn't work put in 98 cd and direct install there. Every other ms operating sys upgrade has ability to install clean. I am sure 2000 is no exception.

I hardly use 98 anymore but I will keep it around probobly til my next major upgrade probobly this summer. I cut my 98 partition down to 2 gig I am just barely using half of it.

Good luck and enjoy 2000 is a great os! :cool
