however, when at other PCs(winxppro), I can send and get files to/from win98 machine.

The purpose of this small mashine is to surf and listen to the music.
It surfs fine but cannot play over the LAN.

Perhaps someone old enough to remember 🙂 can point me to the right settings in win98?
No firewall.

Generally a 98 share is open to everyone, while a share on XP can be set for certain users. Plus if your shared folder location is in Documents and Settings, Program Files, or the Windows folder, they can't be accessed over the network. You could check the XP share and see that the "Everyone" user on the share permissions and security rights are set to full control.

98 machines wont authenticate on XP either. you can get stuff off the 98 machine from the xp box, but not the other way around. i havent found a workaround for it yet, but im not actively trying anymore since i retired the last 3 98SE laptops i used at work.

In a 2003 network enviroment you need to update Win98 to IE6 SP1 to be able to possibly authenticate to the server. I say possibly because I have had mixed success getting a 98 system to logon to a 2003 server. It may also need to have this MS file installed as well. These suggestions may help in the home network as well.
