Win98/XP dual boot

I'm sure this question has been asked before, but after looking through the forums and other sites, I still don't have a CLEAR answer on what would be the best way to set up a dual boot Win98se/WinXPpro system.

I have two hard drives; one already has Win98se and various software installed on it and running on my current rig. I'm upgrading (everything), and have a second hard drive to be installed in the new system. I want to use the new HD as primary with WinXP and the existing HD with Win98 and other software as my secondary drive.

What would be the best setup routine to accomplish this? Do I need to re-install 98se and all my software and start from scratch?

I don't mind reinstalling, but would like to avoid it if possible.

Like I said, I want WinXP as my primary OS and Win98se as backup (some driver issues w/XP with some of my older hardware and games)

Feedback appreciated, or links.

Peace

What you could do is put both drives in, install XP on the primary hdd and leave 98 alone and see if XP adds 98 to your bootloader. If not, make the changes to the boot.ini file and see if you can boot into 98. It should work.

When you install XP it will ask you where you want to put it. Just select the drive or partition and it will
install and place a boot loader on your win98 partition. From there you are given a boot menu and you
have a choice between loading win98 or winXP. Its that simple. If you want to swap or use applications
between OS's format XP in the FAT32 file system.

I have a 98/XP dual boot going. It used to be a 98/2000 boot. I have it on one hard drive, with 4 partitions. It goes like this:

C: Windows 98(FAT32)
D: Windows XP(NTFS)
E: Windows 98 apps (FAT32)
F: Windows XP apps (NTFS)

All you really have to do is have 98 installed first in C, and then install XP and select D as your destination for XP, it will automically create the boot menu, and you are ready to go.

If you want XP on C, and 98 on D, then it is a bit harder to do, and would probably be best to do it with something like System Commander. 98 is not dual boot aware, and will not create a boot menu when installing, so it must be installed before XP. Here is a knowledge base article from Microsoft that talks about dual booting XP.

🙂

Hey everyone: trmiv, Basie, and linman; thanks for the info. Makes me feel a little more comfortable doing this; 1st time builder, dual-boot.

Thanks to trmiv especially for the link.
