Win98/Win2K Dual Boot question (mixing NTFS & FAT32)

Helping a friend upgrade his computer - taking out his old 9GB hard drive & putting in a 30GB Maxtor. He wants to run Win2K as his main OS, but he needs Win98 because his wife has a program for work that will ONLY run on Win98. I'm about to use Partiton Magic to get the drive ready. I was planning to make a 25GB NTFS partition for Win2K and a 5GB Fat32 partiton for Win98. Is there any advantage/disadvantage to mixing NTFS & Fat32 ?? Any advice/suggestions appreciated.

Thanks

No big problems just realize that the Win98 install won't be able to see anything on the NTFS partition.

What program is it that will ONLY run on Win98? There are very VERY few of them... sure she can't get a patch?

thanks for pointing out TFM 😀

the program will only run on 98/ME - absolute POS program given out by her company that will allow workers to check their schedules from home...we tried installing it on 2K & XP - just refused to work...called the company that designed the software & they said there were no plans to release any kind of patch/update (her company won't pay for it) - it will only run on 98 & ME

<< W2K is compatible with fat32 so you can install both operating systems in fat32. >>

thanks - i know win2k can be installed on fat32 - but since they'll be using win2k 95% of the time i'd rather install the main OS on the superior NTFS

Sorry if you've done this before, as you sound a bit exasperated, but just trying to help, and if nothing else, it's a bump.

Have you run the compatibility wizards for install? I don't actually have much experience with this, but it should help.

With regards to formatting, no real disadvantage. The FAQ usually helps, but I don't have time to read through it right now. Just make sure that if you need access to any of your files while running 98, like XLS files, you install the programs on the FAT32 and store the files on that partition. 5 gB sounds like a good number - from an uninformed perspective.
