I just finished putting together my new system. These are the specs:
Asus A7V Mobo
256MB PC133 (Rated for Athlon TBs) 2x128mb
16mb TNT2 Video card AGP.
Raite 8x DVD
I have tried two different HD's:
30gb Maxtor 7200RPM HD and
12gb Western Dig. (I think, its out of an old 400mhz Dell)
The DVD is on the Secondary Master (as I plan on buying a burner and would rather not move the cables)
The HD is (obviously) on the Primary Master.

When I run the Win98 install it hangs when the first progress bar (after it goes gui) gets to 100%.

The 12gb hard drive had 98 installed on it. When I put the HD in it finaly booted into 98, after hiting ok to the "New Hardware found" messages. The HD went from a 400mhz PII to a 1ghz Athlon I would assume thats not good. The PC runs like a dream now, when its running at least.

I really want to install a fresh copy. How can I get 98 to install?

Oh and just a semi-offtopic note. This was the first time I have every built a system from the ground up and I would not recommend building a top of the line system on your first try, and if you do try and buy everything from the same person. (NOTE: I did build a top of the line system, seeing as though I started in October  ) Start with something small, and cheap(Duron, Celeron). I would still consider it a good deal I only spent ~$900 for everything, gotta love auction sites.

Thanks,
Don

Try to install the operating system with just the motherboard,
processor, vid card, floppy, and harddrive installed.....You can
add others later (modem, CD Rom, etc....).
Also I would copy the CAB files to a directory in the harddrive and
install from there.....Greg

Yeah I guess I should have mentioned that to. I do not have a floppy drive nor do I plan on installing one I am booting off the CD to install. The only thing I have on the PC is MOBO, Mem, Vid, Hard Drive, CD ROM. I have everything else waiting patiently out side the case (Sound, Eth Card,...).

I don't see a need for a floppy drive. I have a Broadband "always on" (RoadRunner) connection so I just run an FTP server on one of my PCs and get stuff remotely, or if I am worried about it I'll upload it to iDrive or xDrive, or put it on a CD or Zip Disk. Those damn disks just get in the way and they are slow as hell. I stopped using disks a year or two ago and removed the drive from my old PC (just to see if I could really live without it) I have yet to hook it back up.

I wish I would have thought to try install of the hard drive before I posted the message that may work I'll try it when I get home Thanks.

But just in case does anyone else have any suggestions? Has anyone had any problems like this?

Thanks again
