win98 to win2kpro network access issue

im pretty new to networking but have managed to understand the basics of networking win98 boxes together... but my recent challenge is getting my 2 new win2kpro boxes shared on the network with my 2 win98 boxes.

When i share the folder(s) i want to share on the win2k box, i can access them fine with the other win2k boxes and vise-versa. But as soon as i want to access the same shared folder in win2k with my win98 box i get a password box that says:

============================
You must supply a network password

Resource: \\win2kpr01\IPC$

Password: (never had a password set)
============================

I never had a password set and yet i get asked for one when trying to look into the Win2k box with the win98 box. But vice-versa going from win2k to win98 shared folder or another win2k box i never get asked for a pass

I need help! im going crazy

Plz enlighten me

Hi Vampirella. I've had the same problem on my home network where I've got a Win98 computer connected to a Win2k (Professional) one. My problem was solved when both computer had the same user names (and, in my case as well, the same passwords). It has something to do with the fact that when you log onto Win98 with a user name that exists on the Win2k machine, the user is recognized as an Authorized one, and is then allowed in. There is no other possibility of providing a password when you open the remote shared connection like in Win98. I don't remember where exactly, but there is an article in the AnandTech site that describes the issue in detail. It may be worth your while looking for it. Best of luck...
