Win98 shutting TOO fast

I just finally put my new comp together - the motherboard is an Asus K7V. After doing a fresh install of Windows 98 (the first edition), I shut it down for the night yesterday. right when I click Start -> shutdown -> OK, the comp shutted down IMMEDIATELY as if I just pulled the plug. Is it supposed to do this?

On my other comp, a Compaq Presario 4550 (from a crapaq to a custom built comp, not bad eh?), which I got in Feb 99 so it's sorta old, it shutted down properly - shut the cd-rom down, hd, etc, not like this new comp.

I'm not too sure about that though..it sounds like it's FORCING everything to shut down. for example, I don't here the HD slowly spinning down, I hear it stop immediately b/c the motherboard cuts off all power to the HD. Is anyone else experiencing this (especially K7V and/or KX-133 users)?

Do you see the Window's shut down screen? If so you should be fine. It takes about 2 seconds after clicking shut down before it is off.

Mine shuts down the same way! I never see the Windows shut down screen. If you install 98SE however, you may have a hang up problem until you load the 98SE patch to fix the problem.

nope, I don't see anything. once you click "OK" to confirm the shutdown, everything is shut down right there and then.

Not sure if this helps, but mine after a fresh install shut down really fast. I would not even see the splash screen, it would just shut down super fast. After I had some programs installed, it slowed down a bit, but I still just see the splash screen for less than a second...Doesn't seem to be a problem though..

I don't think installing a lot of programs would help (I have quite a few already installed). like I said, it shuts down immediately as if I just pulled the plug. I don't like this one bit :(.

I believe there is also in option in Windows to "Disable Fast Shutdown". I think a program called Powertweak let's you change that. That may be your problem...

I have the K7V too, and it does shut down pretty fast. Like Insane said, it was even faster after a fresh install of WIN98se. It's normal, you should be happy you don't have to wait. :)

Do you get the Scandisk screen when you start up, or does it boot straight into Windows?

Do you get that metallic *PLANG* sound accompanied with sounds of hd-spinner slowing down when the hd shuts down? I have a bx-board which also shutting down pretty fast. I've been hearing the sound for 2 years now without ill effects so I would'nt worry too much. Besides the drives are under warranty for 3 years anyway :)

Try disabling "Fast Shutdown". Click Start,Run,then type msconfig and Enter. On the General tab click Advanced then uncheck "Enable Fast Shutdown."

while you're in msconfig, go to general/advanced, and make sure 'disable scandisk after bad shutdown' is unchecked. if you get scandisk next time you boot, then the thing isn't shutting down properly.

I just switched to Win2k and my shutdown is way smoother. With 98se I used to get harddrive clank when I shutdown, but now it's silky smooth. drives power down, and then the system shuts down. No instant loss of power.

Just give it time. Use your computer and soon enough you will notice
the shutdown will take longer. Adding software will also slow it down.

I know, I just reinstalled 98se, & for a day while nothing else was
installed it ran super fast. But later after 6 gigs of software installs, it slowing down.

went into msconfig and unchecked the fast shutdown option. the only thing that changed was that it took a second longer to shut down, but the hard drive sound is still the same - I think I have the same problem as Huma.

also, no, scan disk doesn't run when I reboot..so that is a bit more relaxing.

i think i can help you
is your chipset Via?
did you update the bus mastering driver for it?
the reason why you are experience this because the harddrive are not
shut down at all
it still spinning
remove via bus mastering driver
go to control panel and uninstall it
then when you reboot it will automatically use the default
via driver from microsoft
it is bugless
and you have to enable DMA in drive setting
in control panel/system/devices/drive for better performance
if you got c,d,e and cdrom as F
make sure to enable them all before exiting once
you are then ask to reboot
good luck

the via provided a bus master update driver which they are not suppose
to since it cant even shut down any harddrive
and are incompatible with win98
intel on the other hand had a reason why their bus mastering driver
doesn't work on win98
so you are forced to use win98 native driver instead
for they would had the same problem
say
harddrive doesn't spin down
the other problem is that if your harddrive doesn't spin down
it is going to freeze when you try to restart win98

hyper, the only things I did are:

- install win98 first edition
- installed IE5.5
- went into windows update and installed the crtical (which are security patches) updates
- and a few programs

and that's about it. I do have a via chipset motherboard - KX-133 but I didn't install anything that came on the CD so I don't have the 4-in-1 drivers installed.

EmperorNero, If you don`t mind playing with the Win98 or Via drivers, I would try the latest Via 4 in 1 drivers ,that`s if you don`t mind reformating again if things do go wrong. If you already have your OS software backed up great, nothing ventured nothing gained.

Yo Nero. Don't worry about it. Installing more programs WILL slowdown the shutdown speed, especially those cumbersome antivirus programs like snorton and mcoffee. Your computer just doesn't have that many programs to shutdown. That's the way my computer was for awhile. Once I put in some programs that opened up automatically at start up and shut down with my computer, shutdown speed really slowed down. The little icons to the bottom right should be a small indication of what programs are currently running. Once you get all kinds of stuff on your hard drive, you'll be missing those days of quick shutdowns. I know I do.
